Anyone know if there is any reason I shouldn't use john deere plus-50 0w-40 synthetic oil in a JD x500 series mower with kawasaki 25hp gas engine. The oil container says for diesel engines but no mention of gas engines. I have heard this is good oil but am getting conflicting info from local JD service dept. Thanks

It's probably a great oil. Kawi gas engines typically spec 10w30, but I would run a quality 40wt variant in hot summer temps. Shell Rotella-T 5w40 would be a cost effective, easy to source choice.

I don't see any reason at all not too, thats a great oil with a great add pack, will serve you well. I would use it in a heart beat.

why the plus 50 tho? have it laying around? whats your service dept saying?

Thanks Daman for responding,
I have an old Farmall diesel tractor and use the oil for this. The local john deere service dept says this is the "best oil bar-none" for diesel engines. However, several techs have said that the additives for diesel oil are not necessarily the same or what you want for a gasoline engine and they would not use for gasoline. Another mechanic at JD said this is great for gasoline engines???? I'm leaning toward just using mobil 1 or another synthetic automotive oil.

LOL!!!!! what a joke!!! see here we go again just because your a service tech with a nice plaque with your name on it doesn't mean your a expert on oil/lubracants...

that oil has nothing it in that would ever hurt a gasoline engine, just the contrary it(HDEO)has BETTER additives and more of it(PPM) then a PCMO,much more robust for the long haul.

mowerdave use that plus-50 with confidence your protected well,i use the same oil plus-50 but in CI-4 15w40 supered oil!!

Read the little book that comes with your small engine-powered machine. If it says 10w30, run 10w30. The brand of oil would, of course, be an entirely different animal. If you think Mobil 1, synthetic, gold dust enhanced, twiced blessed by a Rabbi oil is the best, then use it. Just make sure it's 10w30. Manufacturers are taking a hard line on warranty claims when the "suggested" maintenance and fluid requirements aren't being followed to the letter. Times is hard and the fact that some of the traditional industry leaders are churning out junk to cut costs leads me to believe it would be very hard to get warranty work or replacement on something you didn't follow the directions on. The more denials of warranty, the more money in their pockets.

I do have a question for the oil heads (in all seriousness). If an oil lists parafin as one of the ingredients, is that a bad thing. I'm not an oil guy but would like make sure I'm not putting complete garbage in the small engines that come through my shop. I'm embarrassed to say what kind I use. Can you folks enlighten me? Pardon my ignorance.
