John Deere transmission fluid

I'm researching zero turn mowers and found the John Deere 717A recommends JD Plus-50 (15w40) engine oil for transmission fluid. Does anyone know if a synthetic 5w40 can be substituted without problems? If we were talking about engines, I feel like 5w40 would be an acceptable alternative, but I don't know for hydro trans application. Thanks! TLAR

I tried to find a substitute fluid for my Honda hydrostatic transmission .... but gave up, bit the bullet and purchased the OEM fluid on-line at a discount.
