I overheard some farmers talking at a local tavern about how good this oil is in colder weather. I even heard them rumor about this oil flowing even better then some 5w40 synthetics. I initially assumed they knew not what they were talking about...until I looked at the pour point specs online yesterday. I was shocked to see the very low pourpoint for this dino oil. I looked at some specs online of some readily available synthetic 5w40's, and YES this JD 15w40 dino had a lower pour point! I do not remember the specs off the top of my head exactly...but I know it was lower than the 5w40's I checked. I know that physical characteristics of an oil mean nothing in regards to a UOA, or even engine wear sometimes...but my question is what makes this dino oil flow so well as advertised? Could this be some kind of "synthetic blend" by chance? Supposed to be a great all around oil I have heard also by the way!

All I know is that Chevron or XOM makes the Deere oil depending on your location and the specific oil. Around here I'm told its Chevron. They blend it to a specified criteria set by Deere.

The +50 is what we run in all of our equipment and has helding up excellent and kept the engines spotless. Havent tried any of the +50II

Have this dino oil in my tractors...no problem with starts at zero or colder but usually my plowing tractor is plugged in if it gets colder than 10. Its a good oil. I buy it in bulk and run it in everything gas just about..even my Honda moto bike.

I've also heard good stuff about it. All of the JD oils, actually. They're pricier but they seem to be pretty good.

I have been using this oil for over 20 years with stellar UOA's.

Just happened to have the spec sheet handy so I thought I would add them to your post.

Plus 50 II (CJ-4)

15w-40 10w30

VIS @ 40C 128 cST 86.6 cST

VIS @ 100C 15.6 cST 12.1 cST

VIS INDEX 127 133

HTHS @ 150C 4.3 cP 3.6 cP

Pour Point -36C -40C

Flash Point 225C 223C

TBN 10.5 10.5

Sulfated Ash 1.0 1.0

I was told years ago that the Plus 50/Plus 50 II was syn blend, better than most over the counter lube choices. Deere decided not to get into the marketing hype involved with syn/syn blend.

My own UOA's have proven to me this is a very good lube fully capable of the 50% (Plus 50) increase in OCI over factory interval.

I dunno….farmers ain’t mechanics. The Deere oil doesn’t stand out in regards to Pour Point as far as I can tell. A few random oils…

POUR POINT
Valvoline Premium Blue 15w40: -30C
Deere Plus-50 II™ 15w40: -36C
Kendall GT-1 Diesel 15w40: -40C
Shell Rotella T 15w40 (semi-syn): -40C

I'd guess that the JD is a semi-synthetic. Royal Purple's synthetic HDEO has a ridiculously low pour point, around -46 or -48, if I recall correctly. If one goes to Delvac 1 5w-40, it's around -48 C. Those are synthetics, though.

Interesting stuff, but perhaps not as telling as other characteristics such as MRV and Cold Crank Sim ratings.

I really don't see the cold pour point of the JD50 much different than other choices in the market. In no way am I saying it's not good; seen excellent results from roadrunner's UOAs.

Just another example where inputs are interesting predictors, but results are truly telling of real world performance.

Plus 50 0w-40 is -57*C (-70 *F)

JD Plus 50 is pretty standard pour point, IIRC Delo Rotella and Delvac are all around -30*C. Regardless way colder than it is going to get in my neck of the woods and as mentioned above not as important as dynamic viscosity properties of the oil.

Wow its a 102f today and the topic of conversation is pour point.

As DNewton mentioned all of the information above is good to know, but what matters is how an oil performs in use. My own UOA's are all of the evidence I need for continued use, and the fact that it cost me eleven dollars and some change per gallon bulk.

I too thought the same thing also "roadrunner1" on this topic a few days ago in this INSANE heat we are experiencing right now in michigan..they could have kept the topic more interesting by talking about "flashpoint" maybe? I also agree with what you quoted about Dnewton mentioning how what matters more importantly is how the oil performs in your particular engine..verses getting to caught up in the new oil specs. I was guilty of this also. I figured.."if the specs look better it must perform better?" . I am content running my rotella 15w40 that I buy in a 5 gallon pail in my duramax..with UOA's to prove.
