John Deere AM107423 Cut Open, Unknown Hours

This was on a friend's John Deere X300 Mower, had to borrow it so I did a favour by doing the service on it.

Out: I don't know / Deere Filter
In: Pennzoil Conventional 10w30 / Napa Gold 1394

Yeah its a cheapo champ labs filter with an expensive price tag of just... $10.31. The Napa Gold I put on was $5.50 during their filter sale.

Yep, blue button bypass. And if this is representative of Deere filters in general, ok but nothing special. In other words, I wouldn't pay a premium for a Deere labeled filter as opposed to aftermarket including automotive application equivalents.

Looks like this is the 4967 size, if room permits the longer 4386 and equivalents would work too.

Still better though than the Kohler "premium" ecore filter.

The smaller Deere filters are champ. Their farm stuff is all Donaldson. I have some of their larger filters cut open.

I haven't bought one of these in years... since this is what they look like on the inside.

My mower takes the same filter, I use a MotorCraft 836 as they cost $3 and change. All of the larger engines get Deere filters as was quoted above they're Donaldson and very high quality and priced right. I could never figure out why their lawn care filters are priced so high.

Just common practice for most OPE/mower filters to be priced higher. Likely at least in part because of lower sales volume, no economies of scale, and because they can. And I'd assume many folks think because they come with the mower and have the engine or mower manufacturer name on them they must be something special so all that can or must be used. As this one is another example, not really true.
