Jeep tranny REALLY Broken

My dad actually wants to swap it with a different transmission, if he could. We were thinking the AW-4 Auto from the Cherokee, or the 42RLE from the 03+ Wrangler. Though I dunno abou tthe 42RLE, it is hooked to the 2.4L DOHC found in the Neon. The AW-4 at least starts off attatched to either the 2.5L/4.0L

Can you name a good Automatic? We don't want a manual.

not true: the 42rle is found in the liberty, nitro and v-6 dakota from 04-up. the neon had the 31th and the 40te/41te in the later years. you see the t means transverse and the l means longitudenal. also the second number denotes the torque rating the transmission can handle.

too make you set up bullet proof you need to put in the manual transmission nv3500, which came behind the 4.0L wrangler and cherokee xj. Mike

Like I said, we want an automatic. And I said it wrong, in 2003 Jeep switched from the 2.5L OHV to the 2.4L DOHC from the neon, and the 42RLE like in the liberty.. I'm thinking the AW-4 Auto is the only real option here.

Its a blown up 32RH- one of the cheapest/easiest modern transmissions to rebuild that exists. We're talking barely more complex than an old TH350 (since all it actually is is a TF 904 with an output speed sensor and VDC solenoid replacing the mechanical governor to allow the computer some measure of control over the shifts.)

Get a decent transmission rebuild, WITH a new convertor this time, and then take care of the Jeep for the next 200,000 miles.

+1 (it should be a 30RH ..slightly different ..but basically a warmed over or cooled down 904).

The things are the simplest automatic in the world to rebuild short of a Powerglide.

The noise sounds like the converter clutch decided to liberate some material.

I would upgrade this to 32RH spec's. It uses one more disc in one clutch pack, iirc. The rest appears to be in the valve body/worm farm.

Oh, and remember auxiliary filtration. The trans shop should have put a Magnefine on it.

If you do the 42RLE you will need a new wiring harness, new PCM, new sensors and you will have to modify the sensor locations on your bell housing. Big bucks. Easier and cheaper to get a racing performance trans builder to rebuild a bullet proof verion iof your existing trans.

I'll forward that site on to my dad, thanks for finding it! I'm sure he'll be extremely interested in some of those. Maybe the overdrive automatic.

Just saw there is no current automatic options for the 2.5L. They say they would reasearch it but god knows how expensive it would be. I'll still pass on the message though.

If you're serious about off-roading that Jeep, you should have a manual trans in it.

You're just going to keep blowing up automatics with the amount of stress it's under.

There's a REASON there are more manual Jeeps than auto ones. You or your dad just need to learn to drive one - it's not hard!

Rudolphna, nice lookin' rig. What kind of gears is your dad running?

BTW rockcrawling with a manual blows, my beer always goes spilling everywhere. j/k

It's sooo easy once you get the hang of it. And so fun!

You've got it all wrong. The reason the transmission blew up in the first place was because we took it through a giant mud pit, and water and mud got went in the transmission vent, and plugged up the cooler, and it overheated. The rebuild was a mom and pop place in hawaii, and it's never been the same since. We've only had it offroad once in three years. It was over the summer, it's been fine since. Automatic is better for the kind of offroading we do. We don't do mudding, we do rockcrawling, and ask just about anyone, automatics are far better for slow speed crawling and wheeling. Also, me, and my mom have to drive it. My mom used to be able to drive a stick, years and years and years ago, but she can't anymore, and neither can I. I've never driven a manual. The 30/32RH transmissions are usually rock solid, when they haven't had a half arsed rebuild or driven through a mud pit. Can't tell you how many people we've talked to that burn clutches out of their jeeps like its going out of style. The jeep is hard enough to drive, with the ultra-loose steering, without having to worry about shifting and clutching.

Any self-respectng man should know how to drive a standard.

Getting your liscence on an automatic makes sense, it's just easier - but at some point you should know how.

Oh, sorry, wait - you're the video game generation - you guys don't DO that stuff!

Carry on! :P

One of the main reasons is that many automatics can't climb at the steep angles without exposing the pickup. You need deeper pans with extensions.

I got the 2 quart deeper pan for mine ..just for such reasons. I don't think the MOPAR catalog offers it anymore.

Otherwise, and auto makes it much easier to stop and start on a steep incline. It's not unmanageable with a stick, just a bit more tricky if you don't have a hand throttle.

No need to get insulting about it, but yes, it's a good idea to know how to drive a manual.

As for rock crawling, I've done some light off roading with my tracker and I imagine its got a similar lowest gear ratio available with a 3.62 1st, 1.816 low range, and 4.875 axles and 28" tires and I still found slipping the clutch was needed at times. I imagine an auto should be fine for the odd offroad trip and maybe better with low power and small tires.

It's just a real pet peeve of mine.

Maybe I'm showing my age, but I can't stand the way people in society are becoming so automated, and the reaction you get to anything that has to be learned, and done manually.

Maybe I'm just too much of a car guy, but soo many people I know think it is stupid to know anything about a vehicle...driving a standard is stupid, there are automatics that do it for you, don't check anything on the car, you don't want to get dirty...members of our society are actively discouraged from doing anything themself. I can't even check my oil level in my parking lot w/o getting dirty looks....

I'm with you. I can understand if a person is not physically able or they didnt have a choice of the vehicle, but to avoid manual transmissions and to prefer an automatic is weird to me. At this age where I am able, and that im not restricted to driving a vehicle not offered with one eg. minivan id much rather drive a manual. Some people think it's too much of a hassle to "worry" about shifting, but after a while you dont have to think about it, it becomes "automatic".
