Had it happen to my wife once, way back 1973-74, she was driving a '68 Volkswagen beetle. [great little car- we abused the hell out of that thing and it kept coming back for more]
Hit a bump or hole in the road and all hell broke loose. She said the steering wheel shook back and forth and wouldn't stop until she got the car stopped. She wouldn't drive it again 'till we took it to the VW dealer and got the whole suspension checked out. At that time I was young and "uneducated" about such things, but learned an expensive lesson when they installed a new steering stabilizer. They acted like it was no big deal, something they dealt with daily. That fixed it and never had that problem again, but it'll sure get your attention.
