Jeep Death Wobble observed

I was driving down the highway today when I saw a Jeep Gladiator suddenly dart over to the shoulder after experiencing what I assume was the "death wobble." I watched the front end violently shake in my rearview mirror. A few minutes later, the same Jeep caught back up to me, and it happened again right next to me. I'd heard about death wobble but I'd never actually seen it in person. I was honestly surprised by how violent it was. The whole front end was shaking so hard it looked like the driver was barely able to keep it under control and thankfully, no accident occurred. I can only imagine how scary that must be from behind the wheel. The tires looked to be larger/wider than OEM.
 
Is this usually worn parts, or an alignment problem? Jeeps are not the best highway vehicles to begin with so this had to be scary for the driver!
Had this happen to a service advisor who took a vehicle for a post-repair test drive at a body shop I worked at.

He came back flustered that it happened to him.

Worn or Loose Suspension Components
  • Track Bar: Loose track bar bolts, worn bushings, or ovaled mounting holes allow the axle to shift side-to-side.
  • Steering Linkage: Worn out tie rod ends and loose drag links create excess play in the steering.
  • Ball Joints: Failing upper and lower ball joints lose tightness and let the wheel assembly shimmy.
  • Control Arms: Worn control arm bushings allow unwanted forward and backward axle movement.
Alignment and Geometry Issues
  • Low Caster Angle: Common after installing a lift kit without proper correction, reducing front-end stability.
  • Incorrect Toe-in: Wheels pointing inward or outward incorrectly place high stress on steering geometry.
 
I've had it happen in a few vehicles. I've had it happen in a Jeep with worn track bar bushings and a blown out steering stabilizer, but the real culprit that was setting it off was bulging and separating plys on the inside of one of the front tires.

Usually worn parts exasperated by big tires and/or more offset and/or a lift. Guys will put 35 or 37 inch tires on new wheels with a 4-6" lift without upgrading the steering components. Even without offroading the stock parts are overpowered and get sloppy. And guys doing the lift in the garage don't always get the front geometry right. CW is scary.
 
My father's 3/4T '65 GMC developed a front end shake after he swapped the 305 V6 with a 283 V8. The shake would most often occur after going over the rise at railroad crossings, He asked the alignment shop to dial in more caster. Never shook again.
 
While traveling thru Little Rock,Ark on the Interstate many years (mid 90s) ago I saw a Dodge Pickup do this. It was very, very violent. I will never forget it. LOL

I had one of those Dodge pickups. A D100. It would happen randomly every several months. The only thing to do would be to brake firmly. Eventually it cracked the frame behind the driver's front suspension. I never did figure it out.
 
Heck, some late model 3/4 ton Ford Pickups will do this.
Ask me how I know.
I've driven various CJ/Wrangler Jeeps over the years and none were anything like as scary as the F-250 we had in the fleet at work.
 
it’s not just Jeeps, it can be any solid axle vehicle. There are PLENTY of F250 ect solid axle half ton truck videos death wobbling. HOWEVER IF you lift Jeeps for a hobby you are GOING to get death wobble sooner or later. The higher you go particularly on factory style short arms the more you have to be in harmony on everything. ANYTHING on a lifted Jeep on short arms can cause death wobble: imbalanced tires, uneven L/R air pressure, alignment with not enough caster, alignment with too much toe in, axle bushings, upper or lower control arm bushings, track bar bushings, wallowed out trackbar bolt holes, worn tie rod ends, worn drag link ends, worn steering box, warped rotors when braking can induce it, worn upper or lower ball joints (almost always lower) to name a few lol. Any ONE of those can cause it. Long arms restore the lower control arm angle when lifted and become MUCH more forgiving (about like stock risk) but even then worn parts or bad alignment can induce it. Newer wranglers JK and up (starting in 07’) have much longer arms from the factory and not quite as prone as older solid front axle Jeeps (anything from a 2006 TJ wrangler and older: WJs, XJs, ZJs, TJ/LJs).

My uncle had a 90 wrangler with all season tires I always thought it handled pretty well he never took it off road and it was on the stock suspension.
