Jeep 4.0L - which oil deal?

I need to do an oil change soon, and Pep Boys has some oil deals right now. The two I'm considering are:
5.1qts of Mobil 5000 and a Purolator Classic filter for $15.99
5.1qts of Formula Shell and a Purolator Classic filter for $7

I think I know the answer, but which is the better deal?

I presume the Formula Shell is conventional at that price.

Depending on miles, driving style it could go either way, but it's pretty hard to beat $7 for an entire oil change.

Yes, 5 quarts of Formula Shell conventional plus a Purolator Classic oil filter for $7 after $10 mail-in rebate at Pep Boys. I was actually leaning toward the Mobil 5000 deal so I could do a longer OCI.

why would you think mobil's lowest tier conventional oil would go longer than formula shell?

+1 Both are good oils. I would use the Shell

x2. For that price you could buy 2 times the amount of Shell for the same price of the Mobil.

x3. I have 160+ QTs of Mobil Super 5000, but I will be grabbing 4 of the Formula Shell deals as well. Both are good oils and at the prices quoted--FS is the better deal.

Do what I did when I bought Formula Shell for 2.29 a quart. I bought 60qts of that stuff. I still have some in my wife's Focus for 7-7.5K OCI's.

Price independent, I'd take the FS over the MS anytime.
Check the Product Data Sheets for both and I think you'll agree.
FS looks like the better oil, and it's cheaper.

Both Mobil Special and Mobil Super are conventional (Super is what is shown for the PepBoys deal). Mobil Super Synthetic is as the name alludes...synthetic. In my area, the price point of Mobil Super Synthetic is too high and regular M1 can be had at an equal to or better price.

Formula Shell ftw; and stock up! You should easily be able to go 5k on any conventional oil with the 4.0

I would use the Shell. My Jeeps do just fine with it, with Spirited Driving.

I ran the formula shell briefly in my 05 Rubicon I used to have. Ran fine on the stuff. For the price you mentioned, that's what I would go with

The Jeep 4.0 takes 6 quarts of oil don't forget to get an extra quart of oil.

6 1/4 to 6 1/2 quarts if you use a Oversize filter such as a Mobil 1 301, FARM PH-8 TG-8 HM-8, Purolator PL30001, STP ST-8, NAPA Gold 1515 Silver21515 ProSelect 31515, Wix 51515 and so on. Little bit extra oil and double the filtration capacity can spoil a 4.0 though sometimes.

I've always thought the OEM size filter was rather small, so I'll keep the L30001 size in mind in the future. Thanks for the tip.
