The wife and I are getting a 2001 Grand Cherokee with a 4.0 I6 on Monday. Is the Motorcraft FL1A the oversized equivalent of the recommended PH16?

I don't know what engine you have and how the filter is "aimed" ..but you might be able to fit the NAPA 1773 (51773 WIX). 7" long.

Excuse me for asking.

Hey,

On what applications are the massive L40017, PF-299, and PH977A used on? I'm having trouble crossing over part numbers. I'd like to walk up to the counter and ask for a filter for so-and-so application and get the right one. I keep hearing Volvo, Perkins, and Merc diesels but I don't know the applications...

Ford used them on their industrial versions. I drove a 1996 Ford Fsomething propane delivery truck with a 429 industrial engine and it used the extra long filter.

I heard that the FL299 was spec'ed for the 1989 F700 with 460 V8 (among others).

BTW, the Purolator L40017 is very nice with a threaded end bypass and can be ordered at Advance Auto for $6 each and they will have it the next day. I think Wix and NAPA are more like $7 to $9, but they are nice too with the threaded end bypass. I was getting the Fleetguard version LF697 (nearly 16 gpm flow rate) for $6 each at Motor City Truck--Ford/Sterling. Some John Deere and/or Case dealers also carry the Fleetguards, but they do have the bottom of can bypass. The Fleetguard performed very well on my motorhome 460 V8.

I noticed at work that our 1997 and up Ford Gas Superdutys had the Purolator L40017 on the 464 V8. Just so happens they fit on my 2004 Jeep Wrangler 4.0 I6

Holy cow is that a much bigger filter than stock. It's bigger than a quart of oil and I think it holds almost an extra quart!
