Jailed for taking electricity worth 5 cents !

If his son attends that school,and was on school grounds engaging in a sporting activity,doesn`t he have the right to be there,hence not tresspassing? What if he`d plugged in his cellphone,laptop,etc to charge while his son was practicing,would he still be subject to theft/arrest?

At some point a fuel thief will get caught

Does it make any difference that it was electricity rather than petrol/diesel.

Don't forget that when you steel a million pounds/dollars the last bit you stole is always going to be 5pence or 5cents

That's really the key point in all of this: who installed the charging station, who pays for the electricity and why?

In Winnipeg, companies, including department stores, installed outlets for block heaters as a convenience for their employees or customers during the winter. They clearly intended to provide that service to the public at their own cost.

So, if the station was intended for public use, then the police would have no right to arrest, since no crime would have been committed using a public accommodation...

However, if this charging station was not for public use, then its use represents theft of goods and/or services, namely, the electricity, which has a value.

Clearly, he was wrong. Jail, however, seems excessive. Give him a ticket. Seriously, no one here has plugged any device into anyone else's outlet without asking? I can't think of a time I have, but I am electronically limited compared to most. How about teachers? Can they plug in their cell-phones, tablets, personal computers? It it is a crime for this guy, then all these are crimes. Regardless, I can't imagine how big out jails would need to be. Just write a $50 ticket and move on.

I read it as external power outlet not EV charging station

A Leaf can be charged from a normal socket aswell as a proper purpose built fast charge station

I reckon he was charging from a normal outlet

And why would the charging station be out if the way near the tennis courts rather than near he main building

I think it was an external so met for use by ground staff or machinery directly related to coaching tennis

I see people at McDonalds with their laptops using the free Wifi, but having their laptops plugged into the electrical outlets getting that free electricity. I need to call the cops the next time I see this and get them thrown out and arrested for stealing electricity!

A few stores around here along with "Destiny USA" mall have installed electric car charging stations.

It's funny when non-electric cars park there.

I got to admit. this is an interesting story. Nissan USA headquarters is here in Franklin, TN. I see nissan leafs everywhere here. Nissan builds the leaf here in Smyrna, TN. I see charging stations that are free paid with by taxpayer dollars. There's a blink charging station at Kohl's department store, it's totally free and electricity paid by Kohl's. "charge your car while you shop". The though has occurred to me if leaf owners go there at midnight to charge to save money. there are other blink charging stations installed by the city, but it's 2 bucks an hour I think. this can be more common that I thought, but I don't hang out at Kohl's at midnight to watch for electricity thieves.

It does not - people need to take reading comprehension 101. The ABC News article linked clearly states outlet, not charger!!!

IMHO it's no different than people plugging in their phones to charge. If you leave something exposed to the public, people may use it. It's why water outlets have security handles and you can get lock boxes for the outlets (or turn them off/put them on a timer).

Yes, I'd be upset if my neighbor tried using my outlet. But I'd then either turn the outlet off or put a lockbox around it.

I wonder if they are programmed to stop at a certain hour or start charging after hours. So, if the store closes at 10pm they will shut off at 10:30? Would make it easy to deter the freeloaders.

The waiting room at Walmart in the automotive area has free coffee. Same way with many of the tire stores around here. But if you go to Speedway or any other gas station they CHARGE you for the coffee. So you can't take a cup of coffee and walk away with out paying for it.

My neighbor has a Volt and I wouldn't want them hooking into my socket. Esp, if I confronted them and they said it was only plugged in for 5 minutes.

We used to have neighbors that would come on our property and pick apples which were close to the sidewalk. I'd say 10 yards or so. Many of them they picked up off the ground and others were in the tree. We didn't use that many of them but they never asked. Just helped themselves. I was little back then but if it were today I'd be eating a few of those apples everyday.

It is a gray area because the school as a public property tries to politely host everyone in town for one reason or another. They are not a for-profit venture. They don't have a formal "outdoor power outlet" policy. They likely spend money to replace the nets in the tennis court every few years but as good members of the community don't try and charge a nickel rent for every set of tennis. I as a taxpayer am happy to host "the town" or even "the community" of out-of-towners to my free athletic fitness facility and all attached amenities so they can keep their chloresterol down and not be so fat. Even if a dozen goth kids show up with power strips and sit around playing nintendo I'd be happy they're getting fresh air. And I'm not going to have my people draw up a list of rules 50 pages long unless a chronic problem happens-- and then they'll post that list.

There are unwritten rules and never-written rules. This outlet's use policy seems to be one of these.
