Aside from the guy this thread is about, yes, we very much do arrest a lot of people every single day in this country for stupid little things. Maybe that has something to do with why there are more people in jail in the US than any other country...

Should this guy have had police contact? YES!
Should the local authorities have spent all the resources they did taking him to JAIL? Probably not.

If you go to Home Depot and steal a bolt worth 25 cents, they can press charges, and send you to jail, if they really want to. And the police will have no choice but to arrest you.

Maybe the arrest will make them a retired criminal, instead of someone who thinks they'll get away with it again. An arrest doesn't always mean jail time, but it might just be enough to give someone a record that they'll carry around for a nice long while, and think twice before ripping something/someone else off.

Maybe a mandatory $1,000 fine plus $500 court cost will keep these thieves who think its a god given right to "tank" at every available plug regardless of who is paying for it.
This is worse than shoplifting this is akin to going around with a gas can and siphon hose and stealing gas every time you stop the car.

Some of you must be walking on the water to be that righteous! Come on, every one of you breaks few laws every single day. For example, speeding, rolling stop signs etc.

But you are going to come back and tell me "but that is different!"

Sure but I don't run around with a bloody gas can and siphon hose sticking it in someone else's tank every time I stop my car.
That's exactly what this clown is doing, nothing less.

Edit: Oh yes I forgot to mention I do walk on water, I did it just last week.
The lake was frozen.

You're right, and if the Police pull one of us over for breaking the law we'll have to deal with it. No one knows the outcome until it happens either, but being nice vs. being a tool might help. And yes stealing is different than speeding or rolling through a stop sign.

Just answer one question.
Would you rather have a speeder/stop sign runner or a known thief loose in your home?
Now tell me there is no difference as you run around taking inventory.

I have seen a whole bunch of people charge their stuff in "public" places such as airport etc. When I used to attend my kids basketball games, some of them had their video cameras charged using school's electricity. Some used to fill their water bottle from the fountain.

Oh well; at least the judge turned out to be a rational person.

One thing you do have to remember is that most of the public charging stations that are around, are free. That's not an excuse for what he did, but let's face it, most people are stupid.

I bet we are going to have a lot more fights over outlets as electric cars become more common.

I bet a lot of guys who posted in this thread would beat the daylights out of this guy if he just stopped in front of their house and plugged in to an outlet.

You got that right.

He's wrong for taking electricity, but it's OK for someone else to assault him? The "me first and the rules don't apply to me" attitude is demonstrated throughout this entire thread, from the guy that plugged his car in, to the cop, and a lot of people that commented. I'd like to say I'm shocked, but I'm not.

Speed fast enough, and get caught, and there's a chance you'll spend the night in jail, especially if you mouth off to the cop that catches you.

I do break the speed limit from time to time, and every time I do it, I accept the fact that I may get caught and have to accept responsibility for my actions. Every speeding ticket I've gotten, I was willfully and clearly exceeding the limit.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

BRB, my neighbor left for work. I have to run an extension cord over to the outlet on his patio. I think he'd be cool with it - he has lots of GC and PU on the shelf of his garage.

That could be entertaining!

Wonder how long it would take him to figure it out?
