Just bought a 1960s Jacobsen walk behind reel mower. It does run but needs some carb adjustments. The engine is a 2 HP (I think) horizontal Briggs and Stratton.

The engine model # is: 60102
Code # is: 6609281

I believe that makes it a 1966.

What oil should I run in this motor? I have some 15w40 Rotella laying around.

Also, the spark plug is a Champion J8. Is this the correct plug? What would be the new equivalent plug for this flathead if the J8 is obsolete?

Thanks!

30w was the standard lawn mower weight back then and the engine was designed with the 30w spec in mind. Is there a better choice amongst todays oils for that old of an engine ? Maybe.

30w is a good choice for that engine for summer use, for cooler temps I'd have to think twice about that.
