First off I would like to thank everyone for all the info you have helped with. Tomorrow I am going to drain the Mobil 1. The Honda oil life indicater is at 10%. I have choose to go with AMSOIL XL 5W-20 for this oil change. I was going to try there new 0w-20 but figured that will be the next Oil Change for the winter. Does anyone disagree or have any advice before I do this.
The car is a 2006 Honda Accord 2.4L 4cyl. with 22,000kms

I don't see how you could go wrong with the Amsoil but why the switch from Mobil 1? Is it not performing well for you? Mobil 1 is a lot easier to purchase and is a great oil but do not let me dissuade you from Amsoil as it is a great oil. I just wanted to give you food-for-thought.

Availability is not an issue with either Amsoil or Mobil1. Mobil1 you can buy anywhere. Amsoil you log onto the website or pick up the phone and it is on my doorstep in 48 hours or less.

I am also "curious" of the reason for the switch. Maybe he is just experimenting

The switch is because I get AMSOIL XL for the same price as the Mobil 1. Plus I would like to try the AMSOIL 0W-20 for the next Oil Change for our Candain Winters.

Go for it!
Personally, I would just use the 5W-20 all-year-round.

It gets VERY cold in Alberta though, so Amsoil's 0w20 is definitely the better choice for winter there.

Conventional wisdom on this board indicates that synthetic is a waste of your time and money. I live in Ontario and am thinking maybe its time for me to forget synthetics and get the yellow bottles. Except 5w20 is hard to find.

hollywood: is Amsoil the same price as Mobil 1 after you pay the shipping charges?

I ordered a case of Amsoil 10-30 yesterday and it shows(UPS) to being delivered today. Here are the numbers,
1 case (12 quarts Amsoil 10-30) $64.80 3 1 quart Amsoil 10-30 $17.10 Shipping $11.34 Tax $6.86 Total= $100.10 /15 quarts =$6.67 per quart.
Tax $6.86

I have a 2005 Accord with the 2.4L. Really doesn't need any high end oil. However, in Canada I'd use a synthetic. M1 5w-20 EP has really good specs. The Amsoil does as well.

In Medicine Hat, Alberta we have a Napa that stocks AMSOIL. I get a discount from Napa because we buy all our parts from them. It works out to about $7.50/L Cnd for the XL 5W-20. Plus then I pick up a Napa Gold Oil filter at a discount.

Hi Hollywood!

I'm just curious on how Honda's new Oil monitor system works. How many miles on oil before it's down to 10%? BTW, I'm using XL 5-20 for my 2004 Accord LX too and I love it. Thanks!

Works good for me, it usally ends up around 6000-9000 KMs. I think it does a way better job then the oil life monitor in my Grand Prix GTP. The Honda is fine machine.

My Oil life monitor on My 07 Accord, gets me about 9500 kms per oil change, I have a fairly easy commute. I am running Mobil 1 right now but plan on the 3rd oil change to be just dino (Penz 5w20). The Honda OLM is great!

Synthetic oils make lots of sense if you deal with a severe winter, and Alberta certainly qualifies! 5W20 summer and 0W20 winter sounds like a fine plan to me.

My Acura TSX uses the same OLM as other Honda products. It indicated about 6,000 US miles for the most recent oil change with a mix of highway and local short trip driving. I'm using synthetic oil for a bit of extra safety margin and because with all of the great sales on oil, at least here in CA, I end up paying under $2/quart for name brand synthetics like Pennzoil and Valvoline. My last three quarts of Valvoline Synpower were $.99 after rebate. At that price, why bother with conventional oils?
