c2007 M1 AFE 0w30 (PDS) MRV 17,100 cP
Nov 2010 M1 AFE 0w30 (PDS) MRV 11,100 cP
M1 AFE 0W-20 (PDS) MRV 10,400 cP (all -40C/F)

c2007 M1 0W-40 (PDS) MRV 26,242 cP
_____________

It will be a biting -20C tomorrow night, right now its a balmy +20F

Please post the 0w30 you have in your back pocket (or do some pocking around too) to expand out list. PetroCanada 0w30 would be nice. I would have posted the "Green Standard" Castrol Syntec 0w30 (GC), but BP TDS only list the ASTM D4584 MRV MAX as < 60,000 cP.

These two are reversed, Mobil 1 0W30 latest data sheet: MRV is 17,100.

Good Day,

Petro-Canada Supreme Synthetic 0W30 SN/GF-5 MRV 24800@-40C, CCV 5920@-35C

Petro-Canada Supreme Synthetic 0W30 SM/GF-4 MRV 14204@-40C, CCV 5524@-35C (in my basement but not in either of my cars

)

The Rotella T 0W40 I'm using now has a MRV of 24,100@-40, pour point of -48C.
We had a -30C night last week and both cars started easily after being plugged in for an hour. Both have factory block heaters, not oil pan heaters.

So what's the deal with cold cranking viscosity increasing as they go from SM to SN?

I would have thought similarly but looking at their RLI 0W30:

MRV is 24000 (@-40)

very much an ordinary MRV #

Correct - Good Catch!

It was a cold one this morning... -30. Cars in the Garage are 10 degrees warmer than outside so they started with no trouble. This cold is making me eyeball 0w30 oils.

Yup, -30 and the Expie fired right up. It sits outside. Now of course I used my block heater. When it is that cold, I don't see a reason not to.
