It appears the bridge is burning for Toyota as wel

"Toyota may refrain from making sales and production forecasts for 2009 in an effort to avoid bringing shame upon Toyota City when they cannot meet targets."

Maybe the Big 3 should have taken this approach years ago so not to bring shame on Detroit.

I don't really care, I don't own a Toyota nor will I probably ever. But, I think that people need to see that Toyota are not Gods. The Prius was heavily subsidized by the Japanese government. They have had severe rust issues in their trucks and sludge in their engines. They, perhaps, have done some things better than the Big 3 but they are not infallible.

Full disclosure, I drive 2 Citroens, 2 Volkswagens (air and water cooled), and a Chevette so they aren't exactly targeting me anyway.

Wowsers, if you think having 1 year in the red for every 69 years in the black is burning a bridge you've got some pretty high expectations.

With such high standards I would venture to guess that you aren't married?

First off comparing any of the 3 big Japanese against the US big 3 is a shame. Period.

The Japanese know how to make vehicles, there is no second doubt in that. Only patriotic Americans will go buy from the US big 3, here in CA there are fewer and fewer US made vehicles on the roads -- you see some of those ugly Ford trucks and GM behemont SUVs. In a few yrs CA folks have to go to neighbouring states if they wanted to own one of those US junk autos, the dealerships are bellying up like there is no tomorrow.

Now coming to the Japanese vehicles themselves, the quality issues in the new vehicles is eye popping. It is very easy to be on the top for Toyota but then it has to keep its feet on the ground...

Not married, and it was more of an expression than anything.

However, In GM's first 70 years on this Earth the only year I am aware of that they had a loss was 1930.

My point in this thread was that it's rough for everybody. There was a time 40 years ago that the Big 3 were probably considered the masters of what they did. IN 20 years, will the Japanese still be on "top" or will some other party (Korea, China, etc.) be viewed as the the new kings and people on forums just like this turning coats and saying how much the Japanese suck?

Give me my 2CV before before I have to drive a soulless Camry.

Youll know there is a problem when Toyota has to go the government with a open hand. Everybody is feeling it right now. Some are feeling more than others.

LMAO, now there's an unbiased post if I ever read one

Honda and Toyota are not immune to the downturn affecting orders of all big-ticket items ... most notably, autos.

Honda, acting preemptively, pulled out of Formula One a month ago ... just to save a measly $500M per year.

Perhaps there is a niche manufacturer that is showing a gain or merely single digit losses ... but right now, sales for ALL auto manufacturers are down precipitously.

Some people would love to see Toyota fail just as the big 3 have, keep dreaming! I bet ol Ben Boyle has never even driven a Toyota, even if he hasn't he'll tell you he has. As far as any other car company making a better car than Toyota, who knows, maybe it will happen, but I doubt it. Hyundai has a pretty good rep and some good cars here lately. I drove the new Sonota and it impressed me. Besides Toyota, I'd trust Honda, Nissan, Mazda, and Hyundai. Not so sure about Daewoo or Kia. And I'd trust most of the German stuff.

Am I the only one around here who hasn't had any issue with their American cars? I keep hearing "American junk" and other nonsense, but I think it's just the haters trying to justify their overpriced, over rated Japanese transportation appliance.

True. This is just a very import biased board. What comes around goes around and the the Japanese makers will have their days of gloom one day too. Nobody stays on top forever...

I drive a Ford, I don't think they make junk. My issue has been the big three being out of touch with what customers want. I do believe the Japanese have superior manufacturing systems though, part of that has to do with their culture.

The Americans can build junk just as well as the Japanese.

Nope, it really doesn't come down to quality anymore. People are now willing to defend their choice of vehicle to the death than admit that their company can do wrong.

I really like GM's cars on the whole. I do not like GM, the monolithic arrogant money pit I kept feeding for years. But to suggest they need to learn how to make cars from Toyota is absurd and ignorant. I've owned cars from all of the big three, plus a Jaguar and a couple of Nissans. Of all the makes I've owned, the most problematic have been the Nissans and the Jaguar.

While my GM's on the whole weren't problematic, I got tired of replacing the intake gaskets over and over and GM telling me that it was all in my head for two decades. This crossed them out on my list forever, though I do like some of their current line up and would buy one second hand.

I can almost guarantee that no one here has gone through the hassle of replacing the intake gasket on personally owned vehicles as often as I have. Nope, it seems all it takes for a person to turn away from the Big 3 is to buy one car that has one minor problem and then it's bye bye America.

I would probably consider buying a Honda or a Toyota or a Mitsubishi if they made a car that appealed to me. But they don't, and they never have. I like the Kia Amanti, but at 26 grand it's about ten thousand dollars overpriced.

I'm content in knowing that Chrysler and Ford build cars that I want, and so do a lot of other people. In fact, more people want Fords right now than any other company out there. That's an awful lot of people buying terrible junk that they won't get 100,000 miles out of.
