is Wal-Mart Super Tech synthetic decent stuff?

I prefer to stick to name brand motor oil. Some guys here use Wal-Mart oil for the cleaning and rinse phrases when they are using Auto-RX but my last cleaning I used Valvoline motor oil. The Valvoline was only about 10 bucks for 5 qts. in a 5 qt. container.

The last time I checked at Wal-Mart it looks like Pennzoil Platinum has gone up a lot so I think I will use Motorcraft 5w30 semi-synthetic. But I think I will still use Pennzoil Platinum in the wintertime. For an Auto-RX cleaning and rinse I think Valvoline works pretty nice, especially if you can get it real cheap.

OK, and you go on buying the same #@$%! that everything is all the same... Think that if you like, I wish you all the best.

These sort of charts (thanks amsoil for presenting this stuff) tell me there is something to it besides just that SM is SM... but thats just me... call me stupid for having more than a little background in these areas...

Maybe not the best charts/tests... but if SM is SM (and by extension, SL is SL, CI-4 is CI-4, etc.), they would all protect identically, wouldnt they???

Unfortunately there is some 'magic' in the basestock/additive chemistry that makes them all qualify, but all act/perform differently. They can all pass the test, fine, OK, that means that they can do some set of synthetic tests that indicate performance metrics that should be useful... but some CAN certainly do better than others, and both pass. If you get a 100% on your exam, and I get a 92% on mine, we both get the grade of A... but obviously you did better, and likely have some superior set of knowledge compared to I, such that you could ace the exam, and I barely squeaked the same grade... it is that principle, and there is no escaping it in anything engineering-related.

But SM is SM... good luck to you.

JMH

As these Amsoil charts show a difference between the oils in the tests, but looking at the UOA posts am I wrong in saying the differences don't seem to standout.

How come Supertech is not on the Amsoil tests?

Good question...no one seems to want to test it, yet it sells so good....Come on Amsoil...test it...lets the facts tell the story on how bad or good this stuff is.

The reason is that Super Tech outperfoms Amsoil in every test.

What I can tell you is this. If you run ST convential and change at 3,000 miles your engine will outlast the rest of the car. If you run ST synthetic and change at 6,000 miles the engine will outlast the rest of the car.

Cost effective, yes. Best you could have bought, no.

Good enough to serve the purpose, yes.

Enjoy the day!

I really agree this is the truth with MOST cars on the road. Most run of the mill econoboxes, you can run ST for the life of the car, and it would be fine.

Its when you get into turbo applications or motors that beat up oil, thats when you would want something different.

I presume the Wal-Mart Super Tech FULL Synthetic allows better fuel mileage. It is only slightly more expensive than Motorcraft BLEND they also sell.
My guess (and hope) is that the FULL is the best buy, both for pay-back in fuel savings and in superior lubrication properties of Full Synthetic oils.

Bingo! There is the answer. ST is just fine. Good heavens!
Stop already. For those that say it does not do the same job as so-called name brand, please provide evidence as such and please provide evidence that continued use has damaged any vehicles engine.

VOA's are back.

I'll post in the VOA thread.

Full Synth had a TBN of 7.5, Dino was 7.8.

I'd be nice to know what the uncertainties are in the test - these to numbers might be different because of "noise"
