Is this oil 5w40 or 10w40?

I keep forgetting to ask this so here goes.

The Motul 300V 4T Factory Line oil I'm running is labeled as 5w40. Interestingly the PDS says "viscosity grade SAE J 300: 10w40".

So which is it? 5w40 or 10w40? Or is this just a typo? Based on the specs I'm seeing, it's at or near the top of pretty much any 5w40 I've ever read about.

The W rating is based on CCS and MRV test results. Do you have those by chance?

Nope, just going off what the PDS says.

I think it's a typo, as a -49F pour point on a 10W seems extremely low. It probably is a 5w40.

Pour point has little to do with kinematic viscosity or cold pumpability. Castrol TWS has a lower pour point than that, and it's a 10w-60...

Amsoil's Euro 5W-40 is 13.7 @ 100*C

Red Line's Is 15.1 @ 100*C

Yes, that 300V IS a 5W-40.

Does anyone know exactly what is left out of the add pack in the 4T 300V vs. the Competition/Motorsport 300V??

4T is technically a motorcycle oil. Probably has some additives to help with wet clutches (though it says it works fine on dry clutches too). Obviously it works fine in cars.

The TBN is much lower than other 300V mixes -- only 8.3 vs 10+. I believe the Power 5w40 is 11.5. Definitely not made for extended drain.


BTW, I did email Motul to ask about the 10w/5w thing and am still awaiting a reply.
