Is this interval asking too much?

I'm intending to run 20k OCIs/FCIs...I have a bypass installed (a B50). I feel more than comfortable the oil can handle this interval.

Would you feel comfortable running 20k on a Fleetguard Filter spec'd for the 5.9L Cummins application? What about the B50?

They do have a recommended 15k FCI/OCI on the 5.9L Cummins as it stands...

I think you forgot to mention what oil you intend to run.

I have run 20K KM's (12K miles) on the filters from Amsoil without issue and they were clean inside so 20K miles should be fine assuming your engine is in good maintenance condition.

Is your Fleetguard a StrataPore? if so it alone is good for 20K.

Standard Fleetguards...didn't see the need for a StratoPore with a bypass filter installed?

I really doubt another 5k over the recommended interval would be a major problem...just figured I'd ask the question.

I've had a bypass installed since 60k...ran good oil (Rotella or Schaeffers) and did some used oil analysis to show the oil was good. Valve cover was spotless at 200k.

No not with a BP,but unless you really want a by pass the SP would do what your asking alone.

I've seen used oil analysis from StrataPores, they aren't quite equivalent to a bypass filter (close, but I'll stick with the bypass).

Already have the bypass installed (and has been installed for the last 160k) and a B50 is $5...not that much difference at this point. But I hear what your saying.

If Dodge wants 15k OCI's then Id go 15k, nothing over. 15k seems like a lot to me as is. Why squeeze that extra 5k out of it?

Dodge wants 6month OCI's. It's 6months under severe duty @ up 7500 and it's 6months under normal service @ up to 15k. I would imagine that the 15k is a fudge factored soot level thing when UOA isn't used. The 6month figure can be tossed too if UOA is used. Add a extended duty full flow and a bypass filter, and, if you're putting the mileage on at a good clip, you should be fine.

We're talking 3 gallons of oil in service, not 5 quarts...at almost $20/gallon, why change more than is needed??

I have used oil analysis showing 20k isn't even hurting conventional oil in this application.

Its not like I'm doing this blindly.

When I'm really into it, I can average 2500 miles in a few days...I would need to look at my records.

Looks like I changed oil the beginning of March and at the beginning of July I had put on 12k...I have since put another 4k on it. So 20k would be a little more than six months? And again, that goes in spurts...it might sit for several weeks, then have 4k put on it in under two weeks.

I have done used oil analysis (posted in the used oil analysis section) and it appears the oil is wearing good. My concern is whether the filter would handle it physically (not in soot loading, but physical break down of the media itself).

Oh, I wouldn't worry about the filter beyond when it was saturated and soot levels started to climb.

As long as that UOA shows that it's suitable for continued use, continue to use it.

I'd like to see justification for doing otherwise.
