Is this a hornet?

I just had a battle with the biggest **** hornet in the basement. I heard a buzz at my desk. Thought it might have been outside. Then it started to fly.

I don't do well with insects.

Im I wrong but neither that bug or that car is a "real" Hornet? One looks like a honeybee ( don't kill it ) and one looks like a crap SUV that arrived as the HEMI went away ( KILL IT )...

Def not a honeybee. I don't kill the pollinators. Wasps and hornets, 100% dead.

I thought it was a cicada killer at first too but I think it's a hornet of some type.

Looks like European Hornet to me. I have a good number of Cicada killer wasp around our place that are similar looking. They burrow holes in the ground kill huge cicada's and drag them down their holes into the nest. Crazy stuff.

My brother and I when were young thought it was a good idea to catch them at a local baseball field. They were in the ground. I found out years later they were cicada killers and don't bother humans. They are huge. Maybe the biggest of them all other than the murder hornet.

My grandfather was mowing his lawn one day and got attacked by ground hornets near his boat dock. He got pissed and set the entire thing on fire.

Isn't that one of those murder hornets? Kills honey bees (and other insects). Wikipedia says that we've eradicated them on the pacific coast. Wonder if they made it to NJ? And yeah, it would freak me out too!!!!

There’s no perfect line between what’s a wasp, hornet, or yellowjacket. They’re all technically considered wasps.
