How do you shop for air fares?

Looks like Allegiant Air has best pricing on Kayak. Allegiant Air pricing also has add-on fees for nearly everything, so you are not close to your real final cost.
We just flew Allegiant and if you book it right there are no add-ons, you just select the package you want. They are typically way cheaper between the city pairs they service and all of their flights are non-stops, no connections. It's also not as though other carriers don't charge for checked bags and seat selection as well as actually not allowing carry-ons at all at some fare tiers.
In our case, flying CVG to JAX and return Allegiant was a couple of hundred dollars cheaper than were the majors, including checked bags, carry-ons and seat selection. The outbound A320 and the inbound A319 were both clean and the flights were on time.
Having never flown the airline before, I'd fly them again and would recommend them.

I'm in Everett, but since you're so close to the Canadian border, I'd drive across the border and fly Vancouver (YVR) to Santa Ana (SNA) direct.

If you were further south, then I'd recommend PAE to SNA, as it is also direct.

YVR is not cheap, interestingly.

PAE is great, getting my carcass there can be a hassle, the times coming back sucked, didn't fit. It's not bad and we have done it a couple three times.

The BLI trip is a little above what wanted to spend, but it is 1st class, so I settled on that.

I need to fly from Bellingham to Orange County (John Wayne) in March. (solo)

How do you high flying geniuses do this?

I usually just go to Alaska.com and pick dates and times. I mean that is what I always do and wife says I get taken to the cleaners. I guess I was spoiled in my previous life because the boss would hand me tickets and tell me to GO. At home wife does it, but the complaining is constant until next travel session, so don't go there.

What about this William Shatner garbage??
Well now we know the reason you are going to Huntington Beach and not Carmel.

PRO TIP: use a vpn.

I have an American Airline citi globe card, lounge access, and platinum rating so I usually book directly with AA. I have almost 300k miles and book with miles because you can cancel and rebook hours before flight to get first class tickets cheaper than economy some times.

I go to Ireland next week and booked with Aer Lingus direct.

I plan to go to Lofoten, Norway in march for the norther lights so I use the airfare search on google to see all the airlines available.

EDIT: I forgot to add that I refuse to fly the hood rat airlines that are famous for fist fights on youtube. Ultra low cost carriers are magnets for trash.
