Is there anything that can stave off rust?

Living in the upper Midwest for years, my 15 year old Civic doesn't have rust issues. They take a beating in terms of rusting now.

If you want local, go to Ziebart.
If you want quality, you are probably going to be taking a road trip.
I live north of Columbus and go to the dealer I linked to.
If you want Krown in Ohio, according to my source, you either go to the one I linked, or to another dealer in NE Ohio.

It sounds like you think Ziebart is no good?

I had my Mustang Ziebarted when I bought it new in September 2008. I also had a 2000 Odyssey Ziebarted when I purchased it new. My impressions are consistent in both experiences.
It has a 10 year warranty. After that, the warranty is done. In my experience, most cars will go 10 years without rusting out in my area.
It costs me $60.00/year for a mandatory inspection to maintain the warranty. That is for a wash, eyeball inspection and signing the warranty. Only on one inspection did I see them actually pull the plugs, inspect, and reapply any rustproofing material.
I may not go as far as to say that Ziebart is no good. I will say that I am unimpressed with what I have observed in regard to their processes and quality of franchise employees. Locally, they are the only game in town.
I have had my pickup Krowned twice. the first time in 2013 when I had one spot over the rear wheel well and a couple of places on the rockers start to visibly penetrate. I took it in to be sprayed. I was impressed with the product as well as the gentleman who applied it. I stood and watched both applications. After the first application, I had rust streaks running down my driveway for over a month. The applications have totally controlled the rust on the bed sides (no additional in 2 years besides the pen point sized original spot) and have helped to control the rockers. In fairness, the problem with the rockers is that they are foam sprayed on the inside of the rockers (one of Ford's stupid ideas IMO.) Still, the treatments have almost negated rust on almost a 14 year old truck, and helped to increase its longevity.
If I would have known about Krown when I bought the Mustang, I would have gone that direction. Ziebart for me, never again.

Cool...sounds like Krown would be well worth the drive...

what was last car?

I prep all my cars by painting the underside with Eastwood rust encapsulator and chasis black, use brushable seam seal on all seams, then top coat with heavy duty anti rust.

then flood all subframes, interior doors, hatches, hood, rockers with fluid film.
