Is there anything special about these stubby B&S filters?

Other than being guaranteed to fit, is there any other benefit to paying 14 dollars for these? I always replace them with a cheap ST3614 ($3.84)

They are absolutely nothing special and are most certainly overpriced. They are shaped to fit the application and that's about all that would make them a consideration.

In my modest opinion, they're way overpriced and not worth the effort to purchase.

Only if you want it to be black instead of white like a SuperTech will be.
I've pointed a non contact thermometer at the oil filter on my mower after cutting the entire yard nonstop, and it's incredible how hot it ISN'T. I think their claims of designed around higher temps are doo-doo.

Nothing special. There is a C&P in YouTube for a John Deere that's internally exactly the same as a Fram.
I have an application where the space is a consideration, so I am buying this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Hipa-951-12690-751-12690-Craftsman-Troy-Bilt/dp/B0DMV9T99T/
Because I can't go any taller and it's only 2" tall.
No real info on Hipa brand filters, but their other stuff gets good reviews.
The competing NAPA filter is $20. Totally not worth it.

It's a lot like the one pictures in the TY video

How to change oil and oil filter for lawn mower Craftsman 1000

Not directly linking because of potential forum rule violations.

When you see it the oil filter is pointing to a rear tire. There is just not a lot of clearance there to fit in a much taller oil filter.

video links violate rules?
If there is a curse word said in the video, yes. I'm not sure about the comments. So, unless you have the time to listen to every word in the video before doing a direct link, post a reference to the video instead of a link. I suspect that the specific video I am referencing would be OK, but I am at work and don't have headphones to make sure. I'm not the only person here no longer directly posting or linking videos. Sometimes I do post screen shots like this:

mower_space_01.webp

As you can see installed, there is not a lot of extra room there before the filter would hit the tire, and the filter points right at the tire:
mower_space_02.webp

So it's a matter if you feel comfortable closing that gap with a taller oil filter just to save a small amount of money and maybe purchase locally.

I’ve almost said bad words in my threads but stopped myself. If we’re all adults I don’t really see the harm in it? But oh well not my decision
