I'm drawing a big blank here, I cannot find a syn or semi-syn non detergent 30w oil. I need it for my air compressor but can't find it. I don't want to pay a premium for a branded " air compressor oil" when in the end, it's all the same. There is a definite mark up on specific oil for AC when it's all the same in the end...

Thanks

You want a synthetic non detergent but non branded? No market for them to make it.
I use amsoil compressor oil. Its not like you are buying that much for 1 air compressor.

The only other thing i know of is powermate at home depot.

Yeah but no 30w. You're right I'll need about 2-3 qts. One break in and one to change out right after then one on hand. Don't know where I can get ut output paying a lot...

Why are air compressors non detergent ? And what happens if you run a detergent oil in them ?

Honest question.

Honest question.

My limited understanding is mainly there is no filtering system/device in a typical air compressor lubricating system.
Objective being contaminants and moisture,if any,are not carried to moving parts within.
CMIIMW.

Thanks guys. I wanna run a syn for better winter start ups and well better longevity for only a few more bucks. I won't be using it often... So I am going to use a mineral to break in then switch to a syn or semi-syn

Apply your "only a few more bucks" logic to getting branded correct oil for your compressor. Nothing better than the right stuff to break it in correctly and assure it a long working life.

Personally I have been using detergent oil in my compressor since 1980, and it still pumps fine today. I change it once a year if it needs it or not.

+1

I run 10w30 semi-syn in my compressor and it spins at about 1,000 RPM. Has run that way for years. Burned out a starter capacitor on the original motor, but the compressor head is fine.

I started running multi-grade oils in air compressors back in the 1970's and have been doing it ever since. Never lost one yet

I have another shop compressor to rebuild for my neighbor next week. It'll get 10w30 and run on until after I'm gone

But all it is in the end is just motor oil... seems redundant to buy a bottle of motor oil with the wording Air Compressor slapped on it... No?

Honest question.

I don't think the air compressor companies even know themselves. For one of the compressors at one of my businesses, they have conflicting, mutually exclusive recommendations across the page from each other in the manual. The one page says to use a non-detergent 30. The next page says to use, specifically, Mobil 1 10w30. Last time I checked, M1 10w30 was not a non-detergent oil. I just use the monograde anyhow, and Castrol sells the ND 30 up here, and at a third of the price that Home Depot or the equivalents sell dedicated "compressor oil." The other alternative would be compressor oil from one of the oil company distributors. Pricing is good, but package size might be a little inconvenient, unless I'm planning on throwing the container in the back of my F-150 and changing the oil in every compressor in western Canada.
