Is the manual transmission dying?

On our '99 Dodge 2500 HD Cummins with the 5 speed transmission, the tow rating is set at 13,200 lbs. With the auto transmission, the tow rating is 10,000 lbs. That pretty much says Dodge is admitting their auto transmission is junk, which it is.

Horses for courses, as the Brits say. A slushbox in a Miata, a 911, or a Wrangler is tantamount to a crime against nature. Likewise, a manual in a truck like my wife's X3 would be little more than a affectation.
That said, my Club Sport and Mazda were only available with manuals, a move which weeds out a lot of -but not all- poseurs.

There is a local guy with a very-rare 5-speed Jeep Grand Cherokee. Also seen a 5-speed in, get this, a Chevy Astro.

Yes, the manual transmission is dying. Performance cars are faster without them (at least according to Ferrari and Porsche).
