Um, that's ridiculous...

Lots of other manufacturers are making functional transmissions that offer good fuel economy. Can't blame the gub'met for everything-though it doesn't stop some from trying.

I don't even think the dual clutch technology is bad in and of itself--other companies have it figured out. They just rushed this to market before it was ready, simple as that. If a company the size of Mazda can figure it out, there's no reason Ford can't do the same. I don't want to seem down on Ford. I have two in my driveway right now and I really like both cars. But I was just in shock when I drove the Focus. Not exaggerating, I just couldn't believe they could make something that bad-and I'm not really that picky!

"Nice try" really doesn't cut it for a company the size of Ford, IMO.

Mazda does not make a DCT.

It's all about the software.

A great example is that ubiquitous ZF 8 speed now found in Bentley's, BMW's, Audi's, and even Chryslers, plus many more.

Members here have remarked how badly it behaved in 300's with the pentastar engine. Yet in a BMW 4 banger it is impressive to almost anyone.

These days, with all the inter-related stuff like DBW, ESP, and other junk the programming is what makes or breaks ya...

I'm aware of that--but they do make a fuel-efficient 6 speed transmission that doesn't suck.

If you mean the MTX, I agree. If you mean the ATX, no. The ATX is better than standard torque converter transmissions but it makes the cars feel very heavy you still don't feel directly connected through the drive train. It still sucks, but sucks less.

My dad rented a Ford Focus recently, and he also complained about how abruptly the transmission worked. My car is similar, but one would think a basic family car would drive more smoothly than a rally car.

We did get excellent MPG, so I guess the DCT did work well.
