Yesterday I made an offer on 2 vehicles that I'm trying to buy from a dealer; one cheap car for $995 and a cheap van also for $995. So around $2000 for both. I offered $1700 on both, so only $150 off each, and the dealer won't come down from $1800. $100 difference! I gave him my card and said call me back tomorrow if you change your mind. Is it likely that I'll get a callback? Thanks!

Good to hear. Last time I bought from a dealer was 2004 so Im a little shady on all their games.

My bet says he isn't calling. He'll leave them on the lot and wait for someone to pay full price.

Some dealers just don't want to deal with people that negotiate. Time to move on and find a more motivated seller.

If they let you leave, they aren't interested in the sale.

Not necessarily....especially with new car sales. I've only made a purchase on my first visit once in my life. All the other times it took anywhere from a week to six weeks to buy the new vehicle. The wife recently purchased a Lexus RX350 new and it took about 3 weeks and approximately 10-12 call backs from the dealer. Some sales managers are tough nuts to crack! Eventually though, they will have a super slow day and decide to take the deal that's on the back burner. Plus, with used vehicles in this price range, the guy almost certainly cleared them on a trade deal, so has nothing invested in them.

This dealer is used cars only, and they have slow days pretty much everyday. I don't know why he's being such a pain about $100 for cars that he's had for over a month!

If you haven't heard from him by now, I doubt you will.
He probably doesn't have that much $ tied up in one or both of those cars.
He figures that he will let them sit until he gets what he wants for them.

If he doesn't get a better offer soon, he'll call. OR he'll call with a counter offer....once your in their glide path, IT'S ON!!!!

He wont call. You're low balling him, there are a dozen suckers that will pay full asking price.A sucker and his money are soon......

Why is it only $100 if he gives it to you, but you will not give it to him? We never let a person with a firm offer leave if we would make any money at all.

Maybe you need to use a Jeffrey Gitomer sales technique. Call him and leave half a message and then hang up. The guy will usually call back.

Do this....

Call him and say, "John, this is Renegade.. I'm calling back about the two vehicles I was interested in and I'm willing to pay you..." CLICK (Hang up the phone).....

He might call back then!

Regards, JC.

Did you mention paying cash for it?

If yes the dealer has little to no incentive to sell. Typically they make there money on you paying finance charges or over inflated car payments you pay there along with warranties. Dealers in this price range sell that stock to attract the certain buyer element onto the lot likely with no credit and a dime to their name.

Not to sell to cash customers...

Just call 'em and say, "I have a check already filled out, it can be yours, or I can rip it up. Which one is it?" That'll get it done, trust me.

I never sold cars in that price range, but the rule of thumb when I was selling cars was this: If a dealer allows you to walk off the lot, he's not going any lower with his price. Maybe with cars in the $1,000 price range its different, but don't hold your breath waiting for the phone to ring.

I have never permitted a car salesman the authority to not allow me to leave their lot, as I please.

Car lots are on almost every street corner, they need me.

I dont need them.
