I agree. They hate Jeep with a passion. Never had any major problems with my current one or my old one... and when I did have problems, my dealer made it seem worse... hence why they are so "unreliable".

Consumer Satisfaction reports are highly skewed by age and other factors. Young people are more likely to report more problems, therefore cars bought by young people have more problems. This is part of VW's bad reports and Mercedes' too now that they sell a $19,000 new car. For instance, my uncle has no idea whatsoever what a good car is and would be hesitant to criticize his union-made car. His Buick Park Ave was a miserable black-box eating biatch, he then bought a Malibu so it's all relative. FTR my (used) 1999 A4 V6 records show no warranty repairs done at all in the 5yr/75k warranty period. I'm at 89k and did a few control arms and a temp sensor. My car drives outstanding. I suggest people drive the Passat, A4 and A6 quattro and compare the experience to other vehicles, most are quite unaware of how different a good German car is. From my experience, few people go back to non-German after owning a nice one.
PS a German-made Golf is only $15,000 and is #1 small car in crash tests.

My neighbour bought a $32,000 Golf variant, the R32 and seems pretty happy.

I dont think any small car has "good" crash ratings. Especially since you have a 50% chance of hitting a truck or van or SUV head on anyway. This is why I also have a base model Tundra for safety. Would you want to hit a Tundra head on in your Volvo or VW or toyota or whatever? Sure a cavalier aint the safest, but traffic accidents are just a mess to begin with. Its hard to predict what will happen.

A small car would certainly not be my choice of place to be when I had a bad wreck, but there are better small car choices than the Cavalier. I'm at work so I can't do the same imagery that allowed my last post, but here is the link to the IIHS Evaluation of the Current Civic. As you can see, it is not only "good", but actually garnered a "Best Pick Frontal" grade. I will readily agree that you can get a great deal on a Cavalier. But consider this: on March 1st last year, I survived a horrible T-Bone crash for one reason alone -- my 2002 Camry had side curtain airbags. Had I been driving a lesser car, the clean up crew would have been picking my brain from the radiator fins of the Tahoe that hit me. A car is only a "good deal" as long as you're alive and healthy enough to appreciate it.

Just want to add that the insurance coefficient is higher on this car than most small cars I've seen. This car's insurance is almost $340/year more than my Saturn SL2. That's with excellent insurance ratings, married, kids, and going thru the Farm Beareau for my insurance (cheapest around).

It may be a nice car, but the added cost of insurance is inescapable. I might forgo that Taurus and just put a kickin' stereo in the ol' Saturn. I can relive my teen years a bit without an additional car payment.

Glad to see that many others are not fooled by CR. That fish wrap isnt worth the paper it is printed on. If you want to judge toasters or toilet paper then I guess it is useful ,but not to judge cars.

How they get away with insinuating they have quality ratings is beyond me, they have an opinion survey which is severly skewed and isnt scientific, nor random. God knows their smapling size etc and as many have pointed out, similiar cars going down the production line with the exact same drivetrain and options with different nameplates get drastically different ratings. throw in that they have been caught lieing on their tests shows how little faith anyone with a quality background would have in their recomendations.

I can't even give them credit for toasters! That's exactly one of the items my wife got PO'ed about with CR!! They weren't even close...

Yeah I was shocked when my Allstate guy said $300 every six months for insurance. We were only paying $525 for 3 cars previously, 2 with full coverage! Darn domestic ricers wrecking cavaliers all the time! Speeding tickets too! I gotta increase the deductible since I didnt pay that much for the car anyway. I sure as heck dont need gap insurance. This car should not cost more than a Malibu and a Half-ton pickup! Especially not 15-30% more!

I had a 92 Pontiac Sunbird with the 3.1 motor. I have nothing but good memories of that car for the 90k miles that I owned it. I ran it on 3k mile OCI's(sometimes to 5k when I was busy in the service) with quaker state and fram filters! (I was young).

I wouldn't hesitate if it fits into your needs and you can get it cheap, that coming from someone who is currently a pure foreign car owner.

I didn't read the entire post yet so here is a pre-edit to say enjoy!

That's not a bad rate for full coverage on a new car, although I'm paying about 360 every 6 months on a new Durango. Keep in mind the liability part is the most expensive.

FL-400's Do not underate the Caviler!! If you ignore GM's silly extended oil change and transmission service these cars will last a long time. My favorite aunt drives about 200 miles a day round trip to and from work. She put 300,000 miles on her last Caviler. It went through six starters(spaced out over 300,000 miles) and never had oil pressure higher then 8 psi after 36,000 miles.

These cars are not as much fun to drive as some of it's competitors and it has a lot more rattles but for the price you can get it for it is a good buy! Everybody on here thinks I am some sort of "Import Car Nazi". I would not make a recomendation of a Caviler if I did not think them to be durable. I will admit that a Caviler would never be my first choice. If the price was right like it is going to be for you I would not hesitate to buy and drive a Caviler!!

The Chevrolet Caviler is as Durable as car's GM makes costing 3-4 times as much. It is not glamorius transportation. You can get some nice wheels and stero options as wheel. You can get "J" cars with sunroofs, XM,OnStar, chromed alloy wheels............. I think that the Ecotec makes something like 145Hp so it should be peppy. The Caviler is only a throw away car if you treat it as such.
