My local meijer now has royal purple I need a good oil for cold weather and pulling a lot of weight .

Does anyone know if its any good for older 1996 motor that is used under sever cond.

Royal Purple is a good oil, HOWEVER, the cold-weather specifications on the product aren't nearly as good as some other oils.

Yes. So are QSUD, PP, M1, T6, SynPower, and they have the benefit of being sold for considerably less money.

Rather than focusing on a particular brand, you need to make sure that the oil you choose is the right viscosity and meets the right specs for the job. In any case, under severe operating conditions you will need to change the oil sooner rather than later, regardless if it's RP or anything else.

A lot of people have a love-hate relationship with RP. Everyone has a different opinion. My opinion is that it's no better or worse than most other oils on the market. But again, you need to match specific oil type/grade to a specific application, and you haven't told us anything about what make/model engine this is.

+1 Although everyone has their own "favorite", I tend to think there are equal or better oils for less money that can be had in the market today.

Most any motorcycle/ATV (API-SJ) synthetic should be same or better tha a "Racing" Synthetic, but often limited to 10w-40 (4T) so, not good for Arctic conditions but great for the Summer OCI. AFA Winter service, Who here drives anywhere at 30 below or worse? Me, I'm inside near the woodstove for sure!

Sorry for the lack of info Its a 1996 jeep cherokee inline six 4.0L I got it used I dont have a manual for it I have been using val and shell 10-30 in it

It is a great oil.

Rotella is a great oil too, at half the price.

It's up to you. On a 96 jeep I'd probably be running Rotella maybe the 10-30 or 5-40 if you really do push it. If it were mine I'd just be running a regular 5-30 since I never tow more than ~1500 lbs and don't drive an SUV like a sports car.

Put this info in your signature so that you won't have to mention it every time you start a new thread.

I do. With good oil I do not use a block heater (my Kia dos not have one).

OP--RP is good. So is Pennzoil Platinum, Mobil 1, Quaker State, Valvoline, Shell, Amsoil, Redline. Pick oil based on your application/price/availability.

Does anybody know --for sure-- what the Royal Purple Co. makes their oil from? That is one of the stumbling blocks for me. We know that Amsoil is PAO with few exceptions. Red Line is mainly Group V & PAO. Among the premium priced brands RP is the mystery. Is it really worth what they charge for it? (I have my doubts.)

ckmarsh, how much longer do you expect to own this Jeep? How much wear inside the engine? Just about any oil will keep it going. If you plan on owning it just about forever, then the higher priced stuff may pay off. Without more info, I agree with bepperb, the dual-rated diesel & gasoline engine 10W-30 in the summer (doesn't have to be Shell's Rotella brand) and a 5W-30 in the winter when you aren't towing. If it is using some oil, or if you tow really hot & heavy, a 15W-40 in the summer would be good.
