I had basically the same experience as you did with a Civic & Quaker State (5w30).
It ran smooth & quiet for about the first 1000 miles, but afterwards became a little noisy. Tried different brands and grades of gas, but no change. Keep in mind this was a 2001 model Honda Civic, with only 35k miles.
So rather than run out the additional 2000 miles on the oil, I changed it out to Havoline 5w30....which never made any noise & got good milage. (Of course, I could be wrong since I put Havoline in my Toyota also, and it WAS noisy).
My vote would be get Havoline or Pennzoil, whatever is on sale & use that. Just my 2 cents
