I am doing a change of the power steering fluid in my 1998 Ford Explorer with 69K miles. The manual calls for "Mercon ATF" I used Mercon V as I had some left over from the tranny fluid swap.
Is this the correct fluid? Will Mobil 1 ATF be a better choice or can I just leave it with the Mercon V? Thanks in advance guys!

Given the above cost benefits advantage analysis reasoning, I question just how much extra FoMoCo is actually saving by buying and storing carloads of Mercon just to dribble it into PS units at the company's various assembly factories. The chief reason I've been able to ascertain of not using Mercon V in ATs originally designed for Mercon is slippage from the more robust friction modifier package present in Mercon V. Given Mercon V's other advantages - speculated synthetic or near-synthetic qualities, and higher viscosity index for improved extreme temperature performance in ATs, I doubt the stuff's gonna be problematic in PS units. I also doubt the PS units give a flyin' fig about the presence of increased friction modifiers, either, since there aren't any clutch packs involved. My take is that for service top-up and changeout fill in the field, good ol' Mercon is good 'nuff, so the company cut owners some slack. But during initial assembly, the company probably sloshes Mercon V in at the factory out of convenience. If you're still a little confused about this issue, contact your Ford dealer's service manager for real confusion.

Ford is still building vehicles that use Mercon, NOT Mercon V. (in the tranny)

So they'll have Mercon around for those vehicles anyway.

BTW, I have a '96 Ford Contour too. I put Mercon in the power steering unit. Newer Ford Contours spec Mercon for the power steering and nothing was changed.

The Mercon V fluid you are using, is it straight Mercon V or is it a multi use ATF? If it's a multi use ATF then you are "probably" ok. If it's just Mercon V rated then I'd definitely use the Mobil 1 ATF, which is just Mercon rated. I look at it this way. Ford was using Mercon V in their trannies and it would be CHEAPER for them to use Mercon V in the PS rather than using Mercon in small quantities for the PS if Mercon V was acceptable. So obviously a dedicated Mercon V ATF is not acceptable. Since the PS does not hold much fluid I would just use a Mercon/DexronIII only fluid. The Mobil 1 ATF is rated Mercon/DexronIII without Mercon V. I have a 1996 Ford Contour and the tranny uses Mercon while the PS uses Ford Type F. If Mercon was ok for the PS I'm sure Ford would have spec'd it to save money rather than using another ATF for the PS.
