My co-worker gave me a can of beer Suprema made in El Salvador free of charge. I was delighted until I saw the date Sep 99 on the bottom of the can. I am not sure if it is the expiration date or manufactured date. Anyway, is it safe to drink it? I just asked the cleaning lady about the beer. She said it was not a good beer. Hmm...

You have a cleaning lady?

I wouldn't drink it. Math lesson for the day: skunky old beer + taste buds =

Put the can in a paint shaker like Bart did, then give it to someone to try. Have a video camera handy!!!

I worked for 2 tightwads that owned 7 liqour stores in the inner city. We had specialty beers that were 5-6 years old and still sold them, no complaints. It's possible for beer to last 10 years, as long as the light and heat don't get to it. I don't drink beer very often, and have had beer that was 3-4 years old in my fridge that drank O.K. As suggested above, do the smell test first.

I would imagine if it wasn't ..the can would be bulging due to off gassing of bacteria.

I have often wondered about expiration dates. Now in terms of over the counter medications and whatnot ..sure ..you can have chemical break down and whatnot ..but I've yet to see a food stuff that says "You'll die if you eat/drink this stuff after the date" ..or even "discard if unopened and intended for consumption in the short term by expiration date". Hence, it leads me to believe that the total liability is in terms of taste ..or "taste appeal".

Other than giving you violent green explosive diarrhea, and cramps so bad you'll cry for your mama, drinking 8+ year old canned El Salvadoran beer should be perfectly fine.

I'm getting the same gross feeling watching the pathetic 'talent' on American Idol now.

I once drank a 6 month expired beer that had been sitting on a shelf in hot weather. It was very bad decision but I wouldn't know if I had not tried.

I say go ahead, try it. 12 ounces of bad beer will not do any permanent damage.

Go for it! It's your duty to be adventurous when it comes to beer, even if the outcome is questionable

Seriously though, beer brewing is an extremely sterile industry (ask any home brewer) and assuming it was safe when canned, it should be fine now. Might taste funny, but certainly shouldn't be dangerous. The initial sterility, combined with the alcohol present in the beer, should prevent any harmful stuff from growing.
