Is it OK to use this shrink-wrapped filter?

It is very old. I don't remember when I purchased it. Even though the shrink-wrap is still intact, I see some black stuff? Is that mold? This is run of the mill Honda A02 filter but still it would not want to throw it away unless really necessary.

I think you're seeing glue. Since it's been shrink wrapped it should be just fine IMO. Moisture/humidity can compromise filter media over time but with the shrink wrap I doubt that's a problem. I'd run it.

I would take off the shrink wrap, since you are either going to use it or throw it away, and feel if it's glue or something else. Glue, no problem; something else, problem.

Agree that the black stuff is in all likelyhood glue, tapping plate to canister body, a common glue area for filters. Remove shrink wrap, as long as no surface rust visible, use with confidence. Shrink wrap increases chances filter is good to go.

Yup, looks like a sealant to me. I'd use it without concern, personally.

Some of my filters have some visible sealant used to seal the connection between those two pieces.

+1 ... My vote is you're seeing old oil/grease left over. Put some WD-40 on a rag, and see if it wipes off clean. Filter should be OK if there is no signs of rust anywhere.

Id open it and look. Could be mold.. Could be grease as some filters have come with pre-greased gaskets. That grease might migrate...

To bad its not the A01

thats the FRAM oil to HONDA Specs... Fiber End Disc and all,

However many people are starting to like FRAM more.

However from what I have been told the Honda A02 filtration is not that great.

but might as well use it.

Is your car worth more than $5. If it older than 10 years I would not use it. Under 5 years no problem. In between its up to you.

The Honda A02 is a good filter, but that black stuff does NOT look normal. I just went and looked at both of the A02's I have and neither had black around the edges. If I were you I would pass. Just use a different filter or buy a new one. They are cheap. I would not want to pump black gunk into my engine.

If its on the outside, it could easily be on the inside as well. Cant brush that off.

+1 Brush it off or clean it off with a solvent and cloth like ZO6 suggested, and use it.

Or if it truly bothers you, cut open it and post up pics. It won't be like you're missing out on anything special efficiency-wise anyway.
