Maybe they are trying to protect themselves from some kind of stupid lawsuit or something, you never know these days. I wrote emails to Amsoil, Red Line, and Valvoline begging them if I could use 0w30 or 5W30, they all said no, follow your owner's manual. HPL was the only one that said apparently fuel economy is not your thing so you should run Super Car 0W40

Another thing to appreciate and like about the HPL experience. I like their confidence and their super fast customer service.

Yes. Eventually the add pack will settle out of the oil if it sits long enough. Everyone here knows you need to shake your stash regularly

Additionally API ratings change. If it sits long enough it won't meet spec on a newer car. This is also a liability potentially.

So yes, putting a "use by" date is a liability thing. It also gets you to throw it out and buy more.

As for calling customer service, anyone you reach in a big company has about 30 minutes of training and is reading from a selection of canned answers, I worked in corporate R&D at a Fortune 500 company - your not talking to anyone in Engineering - trust me. Even level 3 has to go ask for access to engineering, and they get to talk to the lowest guy on the totem. I was new and I talked to level 3 support a lot.

So yes, I understand the allure of using HPL for those reasons.

Pennzoil is not going hurt the lifespan of any sort of shelf as long as it's not too heavy.

I don't know why people are making fun of this question as if it isn't legitimate. Yes, Mobil also states five year shelf life, and Lake Speed Jr created a video about old "new" oil and how it breaks down on the shelf over years.

I'm with you, I wouldn't stash a large amount of oil for this same reason. Additives degrade just in the bottle over time. Bottles of oil being exposed to conditions like humidity over several years is not good for it.

I have a little Maxlife 5W30 from 2005 that might wind up in a 1999 Camry. I'm not worried.

See, if you buy a jug of milk that is good for one month, it's not like the milk will wait for one month and then suddenly go bad. It goes bad gradually. Is oil like that too? They say that oil is good for up to 4 years, but it's not like the oil will wait for 4 years and then suddenly go bad. Shouldn't we buy fresh oil from Walmart each time we change our oil? Pennzoil jugs at Walmart right now say June 2025 on the jug. In a couple of months it will probably say August 2025. Walmart sells so much oil, jugs vanish.

I have a partial can of SE rated Pennzoil. Came with the house. I’d be willing to use it for door hinges, but I keep it because it looks cool on a shelf.

Now, over in the filter forum, I’ve been warned not to use old filters. Not sure how long it takes them to sour.

Amsoil told me the Ea15K13 filter has a shelf life of 5 years.
