Is BMW LL 01 the toughest spec out there?

Any brands you can suggest in 5w30 or 5w40 ?

Yes, because the 504 spec superseded it, which is fine in Europe but the 503.01 is a better choice in the USA since it's full saps. The latest M1 0w-40 FS gave it credence on the back of the bottle, saying something like 'recommended for VW 503.01"

It's original spec was a 0w-30 weight. The SL version of GC met it and then they took it off the bottle because it had been superseded by 504. Not sure if it still does, haven't bought any since I started using the 0w-40 GC. The new M1 0w-40 does mention it.

Many oils say that.
Castrol 0W40, M1 0W40 FS (and old version), Castrol 0W30 etc.

Exactly; it took BMW a while to get a handle on what was happening, but the failures of M60 Nikasil V8s-cylinder wall erosion- were caused by high sulfur concentrations in the fuel. In Europe BMW also sold Nikasil six cylinders and those motors had the same issues in countries with high sulfur concentrations in their fuel.
