VERY interesting!

I noticed it is compared against the quad core, which is the Euro version. North America has a dual core 1.5Ghz chip due to LTE support. I'm downloading the benchmark software and will run it on mine. Only the dual-core North American version of the S3 has 2GB of RAM, the Quad-Core version has 1GB of RAM.

Will post the results.

Current results:

iPhone 5: 1601
Galaxy S3: 1560 (Quad version)
Galaxy S3: 1427 (Dual version)
iPhone 4S: 629

Break down:
iPhone 5:
Integer: 1220
Floating Point: 2051
Memory: 1811
Stream: 944

SGS3 LTE (dual core):
Integer: 896
Floating Point: 2339
Memory: 1257
Stream: 440


My results are the dual-core S3 results above.

I'm going to add that Geekbench appears to be all over the map when you run the benchmark. I've been as low as 1168 and as high as almost 1500........

Ok, question for ya. This iPhone vs SIII thing. We were CONSIDERING getting a JVC head unit for the Jeep, that controlled iPhone specifically. HOWEVER, since this one has original radio and thats fine, we may just get a "wireless through the radio" thing that plugs into car charger port. So, I suppose the iPhone vs SIII debate is still on?

Please tell me more about iTunes on Android? Reception with both? And speaker/speakerphone quality?

I also assume price is the same? Or, less for SIII?

The user would be coming from iPhone 4, and may or may not switch back to a Samsung (Android Galaxy SIII.)

Can you do any research for yourself? It is REALLY easy to head over to the AT&T site and see that both the iphone 5 and Galaxy SIII cost an identical $199 with 2-year contract requirement.

I can appreciate that. But no, I cant log in and see the specific pricing for her. I am not the AT&T customer. That said, we looked at it one day.. I just dont remember! I am simply doign the research.inal choice rests with she... though she can upgrade soon, as she keeps renewing. Family plan AT&T goodness.... That said, she is AT&T for like and it works for her. We talked at length about and I accept it.

We had unofficially said that "Sticking with iPhone would be easier" however now that the radio does not have iPhone specific control, we could 1. Go get the unit installed anyway or 2. Try the SIII and get a "through tehe radio" device, like her sister has with her 4 S. A couple of options here.

I am curious how iTunes on Android/SIII works (it is less "locked down?") and also 2. How the radio controls the phone, the JVC unit. Anyone else control their iPhone playlist through the head unit? May or may not have a remote?

And yes, I also suggested she go into an AT&T store and try both phones..............................

. I would have been surprised if the 5 didn't outperform the S3.


To be honest, I didn't think the iPhone 5 was going to be this powerful. I certainly didn't think it would outperform the S3.

I'm glad to see that I've been proven wrong, and that the iPhone 5 is in fact more powerful than the S3.

Although keep in mind, the benchmarks on the iPhone 5 are not confirmed, they could be fakes as far as we know. But, I hope they aren't fake.

We can discuss this all week. She has to go to the Verizon store and pick up and test each phone and see what one she wants herself.

She states that AT&T has never let her down, works in areas where Verizon does not Including the Red line T subways under the city of Boston Massachusetts and its one of those "AT&T4LIFE" deals. I tried to interest her in my Sprint network backboned phone that only failed me once on a train ride through deep woods South Georgia, but otherwise worked A-O-K.

I will agree she needs to SEE the phones, and LOOK at them, and HOLD them. And SEE what they can do.. The bias is to iPhone 4 (no interest in 5, unless it is the be-all end-all of phones) but hey SIII might just shock and amaze........

Interesting note: With Jelly Bean, the S3 has benched 1800+....
 
I have a 4s and would likely get the 5 if I was up for renewal with wife's phone.

It seems to address my qualms a bit too small screen, older phone being thick and using aluminum instead of glass for casing. Also the 3g speeds for data are miserable on iphone 4s.

Exactly!

As to which one is better? I personally don't care because no matter what, these sets will be old news in no time. Pick whatever you want. At least the discussion here remained civil.
Ultimately though, I have high hopes for Windows phone because two OS' aren't enough to drive the competition forward and eventually Apple and Google will strike a deal when R&D costs become too much.

This is the thing I don't like. I am all for new technology and new phones. But, get ready for my praise of Apple, putting out a new phone every 4-6 months is not the way to go IMHO.

I mean, Apple spends the time and energy developing and designing an amazing phone design and they use it for 1-2 years.

Samsung and HTC throw together a plastic phone, then three months later, they throw another one together. Then another. And another. . .

I wish we could see some one else fully dedicate themselves to designing and investing into one amazing phone that can hold it's own with only the need of a yearly hardware update.

When I bought my HTC Sensation I thought I had bought the top of the line HTC Android phone. I did. But it only lasted three months for the new Sensation to come out!!!

Rg, the galaxy S series is more or less on a 1 year cycle (give or take a couple months). Lumping with HTC is not a fair statement. And plus there are rumblings that Apple may release an iPhone 5 refresh in spring with NFC and a few other features. Competition is bad for apple, good for consumers be happy.

True. However, I don't think the iPhone refresh in spring will happen.

But I am willing to bet the galaxy s 4 is going to be a totally new design.


As for the new Windows 8 phones:
The more I consider everything and look at the market trends, I think if Microsoft does it right, they can become a major player.

Apple has a wonderful "ecosystem". That's one reason they are loved so much. iPhone, iPad, iMac, MacBook, iPod all sync and play great together.

Google is having a VERY hard time having consumers dedicate themselves to a "google" ecosystem. Consumers only have one or two google "android" products. Google's desktop/laptop OS is a dismal joke. The sad fact is, their is no "ecosystem".

Windows has the desktop OS market, for now. If they play their tablet and phone line ups right, Microsoft could build an impressive "ecosystem". One that could really go up against Apple.

This is of course on the assumption Microsoft plays their cards right. And under the leadership of Steve Balmer, I am not too confident in them pulling it off to its full potential...


Mozzila has a Firefox OS out that you can run on many Android phones. So we are seeing these not for profit tech companies doing things that multi billion dollar companies can't pull off correctly. . .

And with Mozzila's talent and the way the market is, a free, "for the people by the people" ecosystem could sneak up out of nowhere and take the whole industry by storm.

I'm not expecting it, but with the state of the tech sector, who knows what's to come!!!
 
Yep its fun times in the tech sector. And I agree with you that Microsoft is a hidden player in all of this. I think you are right that Google has no ecosystem which is a byproduct of their open source philosophy of letting many individuals do the innovating rather than a more centralized system. This is the infamous fragmentation. However Google does build great individual pieces of software. The company philosophy is to let individuals take risks and failure is based on not taking enough risk rather than on the bottom line. So I think we will see spectacular failures and spectacular successes coming out of Google. i doubt anyone will be able to match their speed of innovation. Microsoft can build an ecosystem but they worry too much about the bottomline to be fast across a range of products.

I have the Mozilla mobile browser and it simply can't compete with chrome both from a stability and speed perspective. It loads at half the speed and crashes at double the rate. In fact, Mozilla was my go to browser on my computer so I downloaded as soon as I got my phone. I hardly ever use it anymore because chrome is so much better. And Google maps really has no equal right now.

But did I read it right that the iPhone 5 has 2x 1GHz processors while the S3 has 2 or 4x 1.5 or 2 GHz processors?

If so, talk about efficiency difference! And the battery will likely be happy too!
