Please, if you have an iPhone 4S, 5, or Samsung Galaxy S III preferrably on AT&T network, please rate!

*disclaimer: rg200amp, my ladyfriend has an iPhone 4, it is NOT the 4 S. On AT&T network. Needs/uses iTunes, would be using Samsung Galaxy S III for Android. So, please, remain fair and objective, as I still believe you to be employed by Apple. That said, my ladyfriend DOES love the iPhone 4 and is not necessarily even gooing to upgrade to an iPhone 5, nor trash it for a Samsung Galaxy S III. She has said that every Samsung phone she has had was great, all the way back to Blackjack.

Well then, please just go ahead with comparison of SIII vs 4S vs 5. Thanks

Hmmm..

my only experience with the SIII was 10 minutes when I borrowed it from a colleague. I decided at that moment it was going to be my next phone. I do have a personal Android/samsung bias though as a current Nexus S owner.

I have been very happy with the Nexus S. Cost, contract length, feature set, screen (beautiful screen!) made it an easy choice over the iphone4 for me.

By the time my current contract is up (1 year) the SIII will be had for a steal

Oh, my wife has an iphone 4s, and it works flawlessly. However, I've seen her envious of my screen and the intuitiveness of the Android desktop and of course widgets.

Don't you have enough analytical capability to compare specifications on here and come to a concensus yourself?

I wanted to like the galaxy tab when I saw it, but it just didnt look or feel as good as an iPad. I didnt buy either, though would have been happy with either, but my wife gave me a new iPad for my birthday. The screen is beautiful and the look of the unit when using it (screen) is far better than my experience test driving the galaxy tab.

Now the iPhone 5 is a new beast, but I did make the following conclusions in a thread on here a few weeks back. The SIIi is obnoxiously large for me. The iPhone 5 has grown I guess (though is thinner which is important to me), but i have to see it to determine if it has grown too much for my liking.

My comments:

Unlocked unit cost (16GB for each):
4S: $649 @ Amazon
SIII: $605 @ Amazon
Apple likely holds tighter pricing, but plenty of companies do this, its not intrinsically an apple thing.

Screen resolution:

4S: 640x960 (326ppi)
SIII: 720×1280 (306ppi)

The AMOLED screen on the SIII apparently shares pixels, so it will not be as crisp. I could care less about size (which equals bulk in my pocket), I prefer quality.

Size:

4S: 4.5 inches x 2.31 inches x 0.37 inch

SIII: 0.34 inches, 2.78 inches, 5.37 inches

Ive historically been a critic of how thick phones are. But when a phone gets bigger, it adds bulk. A 5.37" item in my pocket takes a lot more space than something smaller. It is bulk, even if the phone isnt thicker. The comparison is 60.6cm³ vs 82.9cm³, 27% less body volume.

Weight:

4S: 4.9 ounces
SIII: 4.64 ounces

Good deal for the SIII, especially since the battery has more capacity.

Given that my iphone is perfectly fast for anything I do, and Im a heavy user, Im not seeing a big benefit to more RAM or CPU speed (though both are nice) practically speaking for what you typically do on a smartphone. Thus the only compelling benefits are around the battery, which is larger, but it is questionable if that will be trumped by faster clock speeds and a bigger screen, both of which use more power. So then the only big benefits is a more standard USB connector, and the ability to use Flash, which it is beyond me why Apple does not run it.

2,100mAh vs 1,418mAh = 49% more battery power on the SIII. But at 1GHzx2 vs 1.5GHzx2 on the SIII (a speed benefit that I wont practically see), there is more battery use. Ditto for the screen.

From what Ive seen, the 4S has ~8 hours talk time on the phone to the ~10 hours on the SIII. But on data, which is the important one to me, and has a more active screen (so needs more backlighting on a larger screen) will yield poorer battery life. What Im seeing is nearly 7 hours on the 4S and just over 5 hours on the SIII. That makes a big difference to me when Im out on the road for a long day or an overnight business trip - I dont always bring a charger. So the SIII really isnt better there, nor more efficient per se. They are just proportional to screen size and processor speed.

So Im not seeing any compelling benefit to the SIII that makes it overwhelmingly destroy the iPhone in any way. Plus, while I might appreciate 0.25" on the iphone in screen size, anything beyond that is just plain bulky and impractical for keeping in a top shirt pocket or pants pocket in a protective sleeve, like I have with my iPhone the world over.

It may be a great video watching phone, but Id be insane to want to watch movies on such a small phone... But then again I have an iPad, which is superior to the Galaxy Tab 10.1 per my analysis in another thread yesterday.

Im glad there are choices, Im glad there are options. If the SIII looked, operated and felt like an iphone, yet was thinner and roughly the same dimensions (like a 4" version), Id definitely consider it, like I did the galaxy tab. Im not playing fanboy, but the practical reality is what it is, and Im not seeing any compelling difference between a first name droid like samsung and Apple.

I have neither (yet), however I saw a friend talking (not texting or data, but talking) on his S-III and he looked ridiculous holding that huge thing to his ear and face. Sure, I know, who talks on their Cell "PHONE" anymore. Most people only Text or use Data. (Well, I use mine to talk, although I'm in the minority). I have friends with HTC Androids that they love, and also friends with iPhone4s' which they also love. I may just go for an iPhone5 once I decide to join the modern world.

So you have to have a 2 year contract then? You said you were happy with contract length, but I have to wonder if there is any difference. My impression was that the norm is 2 year for most any half decent phone regardless of make. Of course co-pay will differ, but for this specific comparison, I wonder what the difference is between the 4s or 5 and the sIii.

Edit: both the SIIi and the iPhone 5 are 199 at AT&T with 2yr. The 4s should be 99 now and has a better screen in terms of ppi which I like personally.

I have both on my desk right now (4S and S3). My wife like's the Apple UI better. I prefer the Samsung. The big screen is a plus, the phone is extremely fast and battery life is excellent.

Regarding the comment that the screen won't be as crisp? I don't see it being any less crisp than the 4S. And as I said, I have both in front of me right now.

There's my BOLD 9900, S3 and a 4S all side by side (showing the font options.... or lack thereof).

the samsung has a bigger screen, better processor, is upgradable in terms of everything, memory, replacable battery, OS, the phone can be rooted hassle free and you can tether the phone to a computer/laptop, you can make a free hotspot with no additional charges by the carrier.
color and type of material of case is irrelevant (at least to me) because most people always put a case around the phone anyway. So who cares if you buy a black or grey case? you won't see it!
The camera for the iphone is finally 8mp, Samsung already has had an 8.
my 4 year old Evo 4G STILL has a bigger screen, is upgradable and expandable, albeit a 1ghz processor, and it can't run Android 4.0, it's not like I"m missing too much.
I also don't have to hassle with the micro controlled itunes, I can copy my music to my card at will with no hassles or sync'ing issues and am not at the mercy of apple seeing if whatever I am doing is OK with them.

the Samsung is better if one would like to brag about the Number of features, the Ghz of the devices processor, the amount of MP the camera has, and how many settings can be changed. screen size is larger as well if that is important to you. specs like 8 mega pixel really do not mean much, a disposable digital camera that take horrible photos has 8mp
iPhone works out of the box with minimum tweaking, higher quality and quantity of apps (more than half of the apps I have on my iPhone have no equal on android), high build quality. if one stays with in apples ecosystem (sometimes referred to walled garden) everything works perfectly together like a full symphony orchestra. Apple also does not put features or technology into its products unless they feel it is ready, or see it being an important function in the near future. Example, LTE, until now LTE was a space and battery hog. Now LTE technology has improved enough it is included in the iPhone, with out the need for a massive battery or making the phone any larger. wireless charging is novel but not practical so it is not included.
if one is looking to get a android phone there are other brands out there other than samsung.

I thought ICS was pretty well locked down (I.e., not able to be rooted at this time.) This is the case with my Toshiba Thrive tablet, at least. For that very reason, when ICS was made available, I chose to load a rooted version.

I currently use a Blackberry, which is everything I truly need in a smart phone, but almost nothing I want. It has a qwerty keyboard and a small touch screen, as well as good battery life and smallish form factor, not to mention what I perceive to be a safer network.

The 9930, however, isn't very fast, has a small screen and the app market is atrocious. It really is a low - not no, but low - frills smart phone. Unfortunately, i'm stuck with non-camera phones, which doesn't leave many options...

If I wasn't limited to non-camera phones, I'd be all over the S3, FWIW

I love having the freedom of computing with android...bit i hate how accessories are so hard to come by for example otter boxes etc. Unless you go the ebay or china market route. You walk inyo any big box store and they are bound to have apple accessories, cases, etc...

Seriously though, Apple doesn't put features or technology into its products unless they feel it is ready?

LTE has worked fine on any of the recent phones that have it. And despite the 4S not having LTE, it still had relatively poor battery life. This is mentioned even in the reviews that give it top honours as one of their few gripes with it.

The SGS3, despite having a huge screen and LTE, still has much better battery life than the 4S. It will be interesting to see how much better (or worse) the 5 is in this regard.

If you can allow me one criticism, it is the defence of Apple in the manner in which yourself and others do it, defending every possible item of comparison as if Apple can do no wrong. Making excuses for features when they aren't included, defending limitations as Apple being "cautious" or deeming things "not ready" when it is all complete and utter tripe.

Apple releases the features they want to release in order to keep the consumer hungry for features that will be present on the NEXT device. This is SMART MARKETING and has nothing to do with excuses pandered by the consumers of these products. This can be readily illustrated by looking at competing devices, released around the same time frame.

Apple doesn't get consumers chomping at the bit for their latest and greatest iteration of idevice by releasing it with every possible feature on the market. No, they are SMART about it and incrementally add features with each release. Once a consumer is reeled into the Apple ecosystem, keeping them consuming those products is relatively easy by leveraging this mechanism. They DO all work incredibly well together and the integration is excellent. "But I just want this feature.... I wish my 4S had it" and bang, it appears on the 5. It is a brilliant approach, and certainly different from that of many of the Android manufacturers.

Apple doesn't need excuses made for them as to why their devices don't include this or that. The reasons are obvious. The defence to the death as to Apple's "honour" is my biggest gripe about Apple fans. It isn't necessary. The sales of the devices speak for themselves.

FWIW my BIL's Galaxy SIII has TONNES of features and has LOADS of gimmicks widgets etc, but he can rarely use them without a glitch - has to reboot VERY often as it locks up often. But he, like many people think, that's how they are and accepts it i guess...

Our two 4s seem spartan but more refined, stable, and just work, and whatever apps we have on them just function fine, no glitches, with great battery life. screen size, resolution and camera are just fine for what we use them for.

Disclaimer: NOT fanboys or anything. Those 2 iphone 4s are the only Apple products in our house. We won't upgrade to iphone-5 either, but looking forward to all the enhancements to the 4s with ios-6, on Sept. 19th.

Doesn't matter if one has all kinds of widgets and gadgets and "customizability" if the [censored] phone can't work reliably.

PS: oh and i have nothing against Samsung either - i love my LCD Samsung TV that has been working great for 5 yrs now, and it has great PQ too..
Just don't think their phone stuff is as 'polished' and refined as their TV products. (note that I said TV - their Blu Ray players are terrible - for that we went with Panasonic) - We just try to own brands which respectively make good stuff in different areas. No bias to any one brand. That's why my main audio system consists of equipment from 6 different brands

same goes for our cars: see sig

To OP, I think it is too early to judge because the IPhone 5 hasn't even been released yet. There are major changes here. My guess is that benchmarks on the new iPhone will smoke everything else out there. I doubt even the S3 will keep up. But we won't know until the reviews reviews are in.

Overkill great post. That is how I feel too. Heck, I can't even praise Google without it being interpreted as an Apple bash. These are the two greatest and most innovative companies in America. The iPhone 5 looks to be an awesome product. Google is extremely innovative in software. But people are so freakin partisan its just tiring.

We can do detailed comparisons between the two products for the next month.

The truth is this:

Both phones are top of the line smartphones. It comes down to personal preference.

Either way, your not going to end up with a bad product.

Not considering ANYTHING but the actual phones:

I like how Apple builds their products. Nothing but aluminum and glass.

The SIII is made out of plastic. . .

Sorry Overkill, but I gotta call you out.

You make it sound like Apple is the odd one out that updates phones and adds features to up sales. Last time I checked, that was the strategy for every smartphone maker.

Let's get real. Samsung has put out more versions of the galaxy with added features than Apple has with it's iPhone.

How many "new and better" smartphones does HTC, Samsung, ect. Put out a year compared to Apple's one?

They both do. I am referring to the body of the phone on the SIII. Not the screen.

Samsung does.

The SIII is glass/Aluminum/plastic. The iPhone is glass/stainless or aluminum/plastic. The difference is the plastic on the back of the iPhone has a thin layer of glass on it, the Samsung phones don't.
