*disclaimer: rg200amp, my ladyfriend has an iPhone 4, it is NOT the 4 S. On AT&T network. Needs/uses iTunes, would be using Samsung Galaxy S III for Android. So, please, remain fair and objective, as I still believe you to be employed by Apple. That said, my ladyfriend DOES love the iPhone 4 and is not necessarily even gooing to upgrade to an iPhone 5, nor trash it for a Samsung Galaxy S III. She has said that every Samsung phone she has had was great, all the way back to Blackjack.

iPhone 5 vs Galaxy S III

Well, you see:
Samsung is dung. And Apple makes the best products in the world.

Clear enough???

We can do detailed comparisons between the two products for the next month.

The truth is this:

Both phones are top of the line smartphones. It comes down to personal preference.

Either way, your not going to end up with a bad product.

Not considering ANYTHING but the actual phones:

I like how Apple builds their products. Nothing but aluminum and glass.

The SIII is made out of plastic. . .

I guess thats fair enough. You know, I thought Samsung used Gorilla glass.. or was that Apple...

Samsung does.

The SIII is glass/Aluminum/plastic. The iPhone is glass/stainless or aluminum/plastic. The difference is the plastic on the back of the iPhone has a thin layer of glass on it, the Samsung phones don't.

S3 phone body is made of plastic with an aluminum accent ring (sortta looks like they copied the iPhone 4

The iPhone 4/4S had a stainless steel frame as the body with glass panels on the front and back.

The iPhone 5 body is milled out of a solid block of aluminum.

my 4 year old Evo 4G STILL has a bigger screen

My inaccuracy meter is going off.

Are you seriously implying that AT&T wants to charge me $20 or $40 to tether my iphone as a network hotspot, but if I was to buy an SIII, they would magically allow me to do so without charge?

Give me a break. It does not work that way. And AFAIK, a jailbroken iphone can be used for tethering just like an SIII or whatever other phone. The legality, adherence to a user agreement, etc is another thing.

But please provide proof if youre implying that because one has a droid phone, they can tether without fee versus the fees charged for tethering with an iphone.

As far as screens go, a bigger screen is garbage if the pixels per inch are far lower. Pixel pitch is an important aspect, and a bigger screen with fewer pixels makes for a pitch that just makes stuff look stupid, IMO.

The pixels per inch is just slightly lower on the SIII than on the iphone 4S, and so Im guessing that the iphone 5 will yield a bigger difference. But something with fewer ppi is just not in the same league as the iphone/ipad/retina display/SIII/other high end displays on various equipment. And I bet Samsung makes the displays or most apple equipment including iphones, so Id imagine that their displays on their high end phones are pretty darn good, even if their ppi isnt quite up to par of that on the iphone. But some lower end thing just isnt going to be the same.

2,100mAh vs 1,418mAh = 49% more battery power on the SIII than on the iPhone 4s. That is a big difference.

From what Ive seen looking at reviews online, the 4S has ~8 hours talk time on the phone to the ~10 hours on the SIII. But on data, which is the important one to me, and has a more active screen (so needs more backlighting on a larger screen) will yield poorer battery life. What Im seeing is nearly 7 hours on the 4S and just over 5 hours on the SIII. So the SIII really isnt better there, nor more efficient per se. They are just proportional to screen size and processor speed.

Can you define this?

Most smartphone users that I know use them as a phone, as an email interface, to do text and web browsing, and stocks or a few other apps.

This works fine on most any smartphone environment out there.

Not everyone is trying to write code for a smartphone.

So what exactly is this freedom of computing of which you speak?

LOL!!!!

Didnt realize that tilt to zoom, turn over to mute, and shake to update, amongst other select little diddys made the SIII the genius choice.

That picture isnt even an actual comparison on most of those things.

The person who made that image most certainly ISNT a genius...

I just love looking at that "Apple" A6 processor made by...SAMSUNG!

Apple’s A6 chip verbiage reveals Samsung-built processor, 1GB of 1066MHz RAM

Why is this so surprising? Besides the fact that Samsung has been the sole supplier of Apple processors for at least the past three generations of the iPhone, it is not difficult to realize that Samsung is both a component supplier, as well as a handset manufacturer. I would venture to say that most of Samsung's competitors are running NAND that was supplied by Samsung.

For many years, BMW was using 5 speed Hydramatic transmission supplied by GM. Does this indicate BMW is inept because they can't manufacture their own transmission?

What is interesting about the A6 is that it's a completely custom Apple design that isn't being used by anyone else. Still an ARM-based processor, it is not an off-the-shelf A9 or A15 design, but an Apple design based on ARMv7 architecture.

This is what separates Apple from other companies. An off-the-shelf A9 would suit the purpose just fine. There really is no reason to spend the money and develop your own processor design. However, somewhere in Apple, someone thinks it actually is worth the money. Be it an bump in performance, a decrease in power consumption, or a reduction is die size, somebody made the successful business case to develop this. Much like the use of glass an aluminimum instead of plastic, Apple still spends a little bit of extra money in certain areas, instead of sticking to the industry standard, to differentiate their products.

Then Apple hands the design "blueprint" to Samsung, a company with the infrastructure to build components quickly while maintaining a unsurpassed level of quality, to mass produce it.

Yes. I said something positive about Samsung!!!!

Not at all, and it wouldn't be an issue if it wasn't for the irony. I don't recall BMW suing GM because the grill of the 1985 Grand Am looked similar to a 3-series. I hope Samsung is smart enough to pass all the costs of this litigation back to Apple.

Our two 4s seem spartan but more refined, stable, and just work, and whatever apps we have on them just function fine, no glitches, with great battery life. screen size, resolution and camera are just fine for what we use them for.

Disclaimer: NOT fanboys or anything. Those 2 iphone 4s are the only Apple products in our house. We won't upgrade to iphone-5 either, but looking forward to all the enhancements to the 4s with ios-6, on Sept. 19th.

Doesn't matter if one has all kinds of widgets and gadgets and "customizability" if the [censored] phone can't work reliably.

PS: oh and i have nothing against Samsung either - i love my LCD Samsung TV that has been working great for 5 yrs now, and it has great PQ too..
Just don't think their phone stuff is as 'polished' and refined as their TV products. (note that I said TV - their Blu Ray players are terrible - for that we went with Panasonic) - We just try to own brands which respectively make good stuff in different areas. No bias to any one brand. That's why my main audio system consists of equipment from 6 different brands

same goes for our cars: see sig

So, will AT&T users of the iPhone 4 receive this same upgrade as the 4s users? (She has a 4 not a 4 S.)

Also: Continuing. So far, I want tto thank everyone for the comparos and input. It appears that there are good merits of both the SIII and the iPhone 4 and 4 S. I was under the impression that the 5 was released? However, continuing. On behalf of my friend, whom is the AT&T iPhone 4 not 4 S model user, there is not necessarily a rush to go out and get "the next big thing," the iPhone 5, nothing like that. The possibility of switching was raised. I can confidently say that my friend does like the iPhone 4 very very much, and that it has been a solid reliable workhorse. The most used app is in fact iTunes. I have witnessed how this phone, on AT&T netowrk, works where others, my own included does not. I credit both the phone and network for thsi feat. So, continuing... I see comparisons as to the companies of Apple and Sangung. And I appreciate these. Now, I would like to again direct attention back to the products that are being compared. And I have two specific questions as to the SIII and iPhone 4/4S/5:

1. How is the speakerphone quality on the SIII? Audio quality in general? I know some of these phones are really spectacular (RAZR in the era of flipphones, for example.) Can users of either model comment on how the speakerphone works for them?

Also. 2. How is reception with the SIII? I know it is availbale on other netwrks, as is iPhone.. The most relevant reviews and commentary would be specific to AT&T GSM or $G netwrk.. Boston area is AT&T 4G, is it not? I imagine it is.. However, how is reception on the SIII specifically. We know what it is like on the iPhone 4, and that is incredible. it even works on underground subway trains, and I was blown away.

Thank you, lets stay focused.. Good points so far, and lets continue. Thank you.

There is nothing ironic about it. Corporations are made up of many different division. It's many different companies under the same corporate umbrella.

Successful corporations don't let issues from one division, handset manufacturing, affect the operations of another, component manufacturing. For both Apple and Samsung, when it comes to litigation, "It's just business." Apple has said this much in that it continues to purchase components from Samsung. Samsung actions also agree, seeing as how they recently announced a multi-million dollar expansion to their Texas facility that builds Apple parts.

Fanboys are the only ones who seem to be taking the litigation personally. I guess that makes sense since, you know, they're not running successful multi-billion dollar corporations.

You just illustrated exactly what I said. The SIII is Glass/Aluminum/Plastic, the iPhone 4S is Glass/Stainless/Plastic.

Unless you are arguing that the panels themselves are glass and aren't glass over plastic. In which case I can certainly argue that you are quite wrong, having replaced the screens and batteries on a few of them now. They are a plastic frame or panel with a sheet of glass glued to it.

iPhone 4 will be getting iOS 6 and *most* of the updates associated with it.

iOS 6 will introduce the new Apple-developed Maps app. The iPhone 4 will get the new app, but it will not have turn-by-turn navigation like the 4S and 5.

iPhone 4 won't get any of the iOS 6 Siri updates, nor will it be able to do Facetime over cellular.

This is true. I think as a corporation, you have to admire the degree to which Apple is optimized. And their strategy completely makes sense given that 40% of their profits come from the iPhone and if they don't protect it, things can unravel quickly. I think that is what the lawsuits are about and it makes perfect sense. Google gets 90% profits from ads and hardly any from Android. So they aren't as desperate to accumulate patents and defend their turf in the court room. Where they are aggressive is releasing new software that ties in consumers to the Google ecosystem to continue to generate those add revenues. And Android is part of that. Both corporations are perfectly rational given their business models. Samsung is a third party caught in the middle of all of this and they are more like Apple than Google. Samsung margins on their retail phones are probably pretty close to Apples so there is certainly no higher moral ground for them. It's all business.

I've had both (and have both currently in hand). The SIII handles gaming and general usage better than the 4S. I assume this is due to having more processing power and 4x the RAM. If they are JUST used for e-mail, they probably last about the same amount of time.

And yes, the SIII has a bigger battery. Which goes hand-in-hand with the point I was making. Samsung chose to put a higher capacity battery in the SIII, larger than it's HTC competitor too BTW. This likely was directly due to the fact that one of the biggest criticisms about many of the touchscreen smartphones, the iPhone included, is poor battery life.

The SIII has as good, if not better reception than the iPhone 4S, assuming the same carrier. Both work perfectly at our cottage with 3G and 4G coverage respectively.

Call quality on the SIII is excellent. Speakerphone is decent, I would like it if it could be a bit louder.

Just my opinion. If it is between the S3 and the 4/4S, then I think the S3 wins hands down. If you are talking about the iPhone 5, I think that new processor is a game changer and I think I would seriously take a look at that phone. But wait til you see some reviews and you've had a chance to play with it. I think people switching from a 4S to a 5 will be shocked at how much faster the new phone will be from processing power to download and upload speeds.
