iPhone funded the whole TSMC advances because of power consumption need, and made their money back in the ecosystem. AMD and nVidia tagged along after Apple funded the majority of TSMC's uprising, and beat Intel staying as a vertically integrated CPU company not able to afford the latest fab selling just CPU. That's the fundamental reason they failed over time, and that's why they won't revive until they split up.
