Sure but at that point its a casino bet. No one knows whats on its balance sheet except those with insider knowledge. I have done similar stupidity - sometimes it works, sometimes not - don't bet any more than you would take to Vegas.
Well I think it's more than a casino bet. I think the casino might be the media and those who panicked. The facts are the amount of assets that they hold are close to 200 billion. They have secured a line of credit from someone like Chase of 90 billion in case of a run.
The stock is rated "overweight" by one investment house and downgraded by two others.

There is nothing to indicate they are in the slightest bit of trouble except for the media and speculation.
With that said I dont believe in catching falling knives but ... once the knife lands I might pick it up. Well most likely not, trading resumed and going higher than I wanted.

Might be worse - ha! Actually, I have no idea if its a good bet or a bad one. If it doesn't go to zero then its probably a good one - but I don't trade banks.

The whole problem with a bank run is when everyone tries to head for the exit there isn't enough liquidity. Even if there not insolvent, and they become illiquid the regulators will step in and shut the place down. At that point your stock goes to zero or very close - even if there not technically insolvent, and the problem is that until you sort everything out, you don't really know.

Just purchased FRC (First Republic Bank) this morning for $34 a share using some left over change after purchasing SCHW yesterday.
The other holding in this account is my long time staple WMT and the account is once again fully invested, except for WMT the bank stock holdings I have no plan in mind long term or short term or day trade.

Put in order for several hundred 3 mo CD's.
I did too - 100 Schawb 18mo.(5.35%) then pulled it when looking at the recent transactions in my Fid account.
and saw the govnt money market has been paying 4.35. Good enough and cash remains liquid. Also poked around and sold some underperforming funds in the IRA.
No about my 90K HELOC moving from 2.45 to 6.35% What to do.

Yeah, well aware of this. Im comfortable owning SCHW ... its only been a day and a half and I dont day trade yet but its up over 10% for me. They are in solid shape long term and short, whether anyone wants to own it as the industry tanks is a risk for sure.

FRC Im not to concerned about, it was just left over change in my account that I purchased a small amount based on a theory, not that I want to lose it but I am sure I wont and if I do it will only hit my pride and not my net worth by much except maybe my profit in Schwab.
I feel comfortable with it though because a big bank will back them with something like a 90 billion line of credit against their something close to 200 billion in assets.
What the heck do I know? Nothing...

Basically why I stayed with 3 mo. The difference going out 1 yr is 5.35% and 2 year is 5.25!

I have too much in MMs right now. Funny yeah, I kinda forgot/forget - almost like pennies for years - then the end of the months now -HOLY COW

FYI,
Got cold feet on this one. SCHW Im VERY comfortable with and doing well.

I got rid of FRC almost as fast as I bought it. It was just a small amount but dont have any conviction on this one like I do SCHW which I am holding and up 10.5% since 3:55 pm Monday...
My loss on FRC day trade, heck more like an hour trade was - $38.71 (not an mis print) *LOL* Just not for me.

I was going to reply to wish you luck on that trade but to keep a close eye on it.

😂 Yeah, a lot of luck would have been needed.

Yeah, I cant deal with it mentally, not worth the stress, too much unknown even though I wasnt risking a lot of money, well, that is just it, it's not worth it. Just not for me. Im usually not careless and cant find much good about FRC
SCHW I can see doing well and will never be junk status like I think S&P might have just called FRC. Im only skimming over the news did I say? Im literally in the middle of a house purchase. Have enough on my mind. *LOL*

It looks like the Oil stocks got clobbered today . I'm keeping a close eye on Devon ( DVN ) . The dividend is now up to 9% . Plus Insiders have been recently buying .

FRC down 30% this morning.

I know!!!! I said to my wife this morning thank god I took that $39 loss a little while after I bought it the other day! *LOL*
(I assume you saw my post on that, to be transparent I always mention my buy and sells, if you didnt see it, it is in here some place or the other investing thread)
Edit: I see a few posts up you noticed it. So forget what I wrote above.
Im actually watching Schwab today, nice profit but bonds losses now come to light will affects earnings for some time and darn it. Got carried away in here and its already cut my profit in half *LOL* I could have dumped it this morning, will decide if I hold it can give back the rest of my profit and then sell or hang for a while.
We must remember, besides banks stocks the market itself is looking pretty sick!

Darn, Im so upset with myself, lost focus and came into BITOG first! Instead of my Schwab account... by for now. *LOL*
Gave up half my gain ... but is what it is.. will hold and see what happens I would have liked to get 60. But now with the bond loses in the news it will limit upside and possibly trash the stock for a while and well, didnt really want to be in here for the long term.

Kinda why I TRY to stay on even my shaky script on stocks.

ECB is mercilessly raising rates. I get it, but still does not make sense. Well I guess it just gives them more head room when the excrement REALLY hits the rotating air movement blades.

I did read someplace Schwabs CEO and Executives purchased 8 million common Schwab shares over the last couple days. I just skimmed over it dont know the details and cant even remember where I saw it.

But found this quickly

and someone else... I dont know anything about this company and could care less except that they buck the trend *LOL*

That's a good sign. A bunch of people probably already knew that, so I look at such buys as more of longer term reassurance.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I put in a (low) buy bid on OZKAP close to $15/share

EDIT: Ah, nice looks like Fido is filling my order 100-200 shares at a time at my bid price. And it pops just above the price.....

I have faith in Schwab but I am biased as I have accounts with them.
Well, I had Ameritrade and now have Schwab since they bought out Ameri, decades ago, many decades ago I did have Schwab so just went full circle.
Executions have been great, had an issue just yesterday with texts that were to long delayed to get into my account to the point I had to call them and they acknowledged issues they were working on, been good since..
To be honest this wasnt going to be a long term play, taking it a day at a time, if it behaved the way I would like it would be longer term but now I am at the point that earnings will be limited due to bond loses so may or may not bail at any time. Will see, I do know long term it will be fine but I wanted it to go straight back up *LOL*
