Off the top of my head, Redline / Motul / Ravenol makes PAO / Ester blends (specific ones in their line up)

I agree, very thorough article. I have been using Motul 5W-40 in my Mark I/8N TT3.2 for years, most recently the VAG-specific
type. A quick look at the Motul website shows that oil to be no longer listed in their Specific line! If so, I will change to the 8100 X-CESS (gen2), which has approvals for multiple manufacturers.

Motul products are pricey--however their performance allows me to extend my oil change interval to up to 18 months, since I usually only drive about 3K miles in that time. I have used their DSG/Twin-clutch trans fluid as well, also 100% synthetic.

I still prefer PAO/AN to any ester.

Esters are said to be more expensive than PAO, yet Castrol's Magnatec is widely thought to use some type of esters and it's a budget oil. Interesting.
