You should be able to just click on chrome to open it... What happens if you try clicking open chrome?

I'd have to do a reboot off the CD to see what all went on. Since it was the first time I did this, I was kind of hunting around. From what I recall, you have to setup the network, and then someplace you chose a browser to use, then it load the browser. Once that is done, FF for instance (since I chose that) will then show up in the 'menu' > 'Internet' menu. I didn't see Google Chrome listed there, only FF.

Not so say you couldn't load up another browser without rebooting off the CD, I'm just not finding out how yet.

Well I haven't used Puppy off the disc much at all, I have mine installed on the HDD. I know other Linux distros would work that way, but not sure on puppy. You could be correct.

Ok I just booted my computer off the Puppy Disc. (writing this off the live DVD) I can switch between Opera and Sea Monkey (the only two browsers on the LTS version of Puppy) without rebooting. How did you connect to the internet? I never saw anything that said I needed to pick a browser when I connected to the internet.

^^^ I'm going to reboot off the CD and go through it again as I can't recall the details. Be back in a few.

OK, I'm back on a reboot off the PL CD. You're right, I didn't have to setup the network, my modem was working without any network setup.

So I clicked the "Browse" icon, and then a list of browsers shows up.

Firefox
Sea Monkey
Chromium Ubuntu Chrome (which I'm using now)
Opera Fast
Iron Chrome Based

It looks like once you have loaded a browser to use, you can't load up a different one. The one you load into RAM is the 'default' browser. Unless there is a way to change the default browser without rebooting from the CD ... I don't really know.

I tried speedtest.net and it says I still need Adobe Flash and JaveScript enabled, so apparently this Ubuntu Chrome doesn't have that.

Guess I'll search the net to see if there are any other modem speed tests I can find and run.

So I searched Google and found an internet speed test that doesn't require any Flash or Jave like 99+% of them I found.

www.speedof.me

It claims:
"SpeedOf.Me is an HTML5 Internet speed test. No Flash or Java needed! It is the smartest and most accurate online bandwidth test. It works well on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows 8 and other mobile devices, as well as desktop computers."

This tester downloads and uploades a bunch of different sized files as you can see as the test runs. Pretty cool speed tester actually.

So I can run this speed test with PL. Got some speeds that were right up to where they are supposed to be for my DSL service. Got avg of 105 ms ping, 1.2Mbps upload and 880 Kbps upload.

The upload speeds I see here are much faster than when I was running speedtest.net in Windows, which were always around 500 Kbps.

So does that mean there is something going on with Windows that is slowing down the upload speed? I will have to run this same tester in Windows and see how it compared to running it in PL.

Hmmm that is strange. I'm not familiar with that exact Puppy Linux release, but it should be about the same as the one I am using. I ran speedtest.com without a problem on Opera on the live CD. Try going to the puppy menu (lower left corner) and see if you can try other browsers from the internet line on that menu.

Main thing is to run the net and see if you get the same slow downs as you have been getting.

Nope, if I go into 'menu' > 'Internet" the only browser that shows up is the one I setup as the default browser. I see no way to set a new default browser. If you can found out how without rebooting from the CD that would be great.

Very possible that it is OS related. What windows do you have? XP? I would try that same test you did on Puppy Linux on windows and report back. Then I would run Linux some more and see if you get any slow downs.

Just ran another speed test on www.speedof.me and this time I get 870 Kbps (0.870 Mbps) and 890 Kbps with 110 ms ping. Download speed is way down. Now is it the modem or the network? ... hummm.

Well I guess I would need to download the version you have and try that. I'll get the iso now and boot it from my usb.

Is it appear to be slowing down or just in the test?

Yes, Windows XP, SP3. Always keep it upto date with updates and good anti-virus and malware protection and do regular manual scans. Never find much.

I see what you mean! In this image from the puppy website:

Haven't been surfing except to run this speed test. I ran a few back to back, and one out of 4 or 5 will show a slow download speed. The upload speed is way more than I would see in Windows running speedtest.net.

I think I'm gonna boot back up into Windows and run this new tester I found to see how it compares to running it in PL.

Did one more speed test while in PL. This time got 1.34 Mbps upload and 910 Kbps download. Seems the download speed is all over the place. Since I'm using PL, it has to be the modem of the CenturyLink network/servers.

Booting back up in Windows ... stay tuned.

They should be about the same, but I would run the same one in windows that you did in Puppy Linux just to see.

I'm staying tuned!
