I got an automatic update from Microsoft for IE8 under Windows XP today. I thought I read a couple articles where it said Microsoft wasn't going to push a patch for the latest big IE security issue for XP, but apparently they changed their minds.

I hardly ever use IE, but I guess it's nice that the security update was pushed out to the XP users too.

If anyone has updated turned off, you might check manually for this update.

Yes, while some may say "...but XP is 13 years old and they said they were done with updates and you have to cut an OS off at some point", I think this was a good move on MS part due to the severity of the problem.

While yes it was a bad flaw, and yes some were affected by this, I think the media did a great job of blowing it out of proportion.

After reading this post at 2:21 AM EDT, I launched Windows Update and got the patch installed on my XP box.

Sure blown out of proportion. Can't figure out why anyone would use I.E. it is the most insecure and slowest browser out there.

I don't use it unless necessary but if the patch is available, why not?

Why are people still using XP?

I'd buy a Win 8 computer tomorrow if I could, but for a variety of personal reasons (including being laid off 3 months ago) I can't. So I'm hoping for the best until I can buy one and if it turns out that I can't, then the XP box will eventually get Linux Mint 17 XFCE.

I have several XP VM's I run for various things. It's not worth the hassle to get off of it and "upgrade" to Win7 or Win8. I don't use them very often, and it's so easy to clone the VM if I want to use it for something else and then destroy it.

Because some of us continue to run older hardware that isn't worth the upgrade to run Win 7 or later.

I dumped my older XP laptop. Then last night tried windows update on another older laptop (windows 7) and it said it had an important IE update. It failed each attempt. Tried the microsoft fix and still fail. Then downloaded newer version, ran it and still failed.
Now my recent buy laptop with windows 8.1 don't seem so bad after all... at least its running/working. Fast too with the SSD.

I don't have much good to say about Microsoft lately with the Windows 8 debacle, but I will give them a LOT of credit for supporting Windows XP for a looong time, and being responsible enough to provide an emergency patch for such a severe security hole......The same kind of decency cannot be said for the
Fruit company.

It's also good business too, because people do remember things like this.

I dumped XP, and IE Explorer with it, my only regret is I didn't do it years ago. I anxiously await the release of Linux Mint 17.

They had to do it for liability. Lot's of commercials still use XP and the flaw was an old problem.

There are some websites that work only with IE. I personally use firefox.

After several unsuccessful attempts to update my older windows 7 laptop to include updating IE, I gave up.
Then decided to asked my youngest if he could check it out. He got it all updated to include updating newer version of IE.... already done when I checked back in less than a half hour. Grrrrrrrrrrrr thanks kid.

Actually they do not, MS officially ceased ANY and ALL support for Windows XP consumer product except for certain businesses that pay a LOT of money for continued support.

Those commercial businesses must pay for continued support.
