I have been getting conflicting answers on various sites, the manual states that non detergent 10W oil is to be used in trans.Others have said Hytrans or TOTD 4 can be used.10W non detergent is getting hard to find and just seeing if anyone can say yes or no to alternatives.

You can find heavy duty 10w fairly easily. Chevron makes a Delo 100 I believe. P66 is T5x 10w. Every major should have one.

Otherwise yes, you can use a TO4 10w as well. If that’s easier to find, just probably a tad bit more expensive.

It’s not non-detergent 10w.

Here’s a couple options and both look readily available for ordering. I just googled “non detergent 10W” oil and got these. If these prices are reasonable or not I don’t really know

Considering that the TD20 is a large dozer and probably take north of 20 gallons of transmission oil, I think that non-detergent oil may be cost prohibitive.

TO-4 is currently available in 5 liter and 55 gallon drums through Cat. PN: 100-7019: TDTO 10W (5 Liters). I've found Cat to be pretty handy with fluids and filters of high quality. Not cheap, but usually very easy to source. The local dealer can also source a lot of parts for other brands as well.

Prior to the TDTO oil, 10W diesel engine oil was the industry norm. I have significant experience with a fleet of IH, Dresser, and CAT equipment when a distributor substituted a cheaper "hydraulic" oil for the 10W. Hydraulic pump failures were rampant.

Turns out the hydraulic pumps required zinc which was not in the basic hydraulic oil the distributor substituted.
I have significant experience with TD15s and TD25s, using the TDTO, and it is absolutely the way to go. If not TDTO, then 10W heavy duty engine oil. It doesn't need to be name brand engine oil, but it needs zinc.

If you read enough older IH manuals, you may run across the outdated recommendations on engine oil viscosity. It went something like SAE 30, then 20, then 10. As the temperatures went lower on the chart they recommended mixing 10W with diesel fuel to thin it. Times have changed and picking a modern lubricant is absolutely the way to go.

When we used Mobil Delvac 1310 hydraulic pump problems were nonexistent. The work season of the substituted hydraulic fluid, pump problems became a constant. Switching back to 10W engine oil, pump problems again became a non-issue. Later with the use of drive train oil, pump problems were still not an issue. Clutches however lasted a lot longer.
