Bought new yesterday and so far I have about an hour on it with the 30W oil that was supplied with the mower in the box. Manual says to run the break in oil to 5 hours then change. None of the brick and mortar stores near me had single quarts of 10W-40 except the gas station down the road. They had Pure Guard synthetic blend 10W-40 for $4.69 so I grabbed a few quarts. Is Pure Guard a good oil? I’ve known of the oil being used on this site for various applications, but never used myself.

Edit: the manual says 10W-30, but it’s an air cooled engine and this is central Alabama so it’s getting 10W-40.

I understand Pure Guard is an Omni Specialty product. I have used similar oils under the O'Reilly brand when Omni made that oil. I would use it with reasonable confidence.

Right on the money. 5/10-30/40 is just fine.

That oil will work fine. Had a new Briggs and Scrapem engine on my riding mower. Single piston, no oil filter, 15.5 hp. Dumped the 30wt it came with after 4 or 5 hrs. Plenty of shiny stuff in that oil. Then, dumped the 10W40 I was using every 4 or 5 hours for 3X. After 4 changes, it finally stopped shedding metal, or aluminum, or whatever was breaking in. Now, it goes a full mow season without any noticeable shiny flakes in the oil.

Yes, that oil should be just fine. Always nice to get that new oil out a new engine after 5 hours or less.
Yeah, I’ve seen pure guard listed on the oil change thread here so I know it’s a good enough oil to be trustworthy at least. I haven’t used a synthetic blend oil since the first time I tried Valvoline MaxLife about six or seven years ago which I had no fear in using Again especially for a pushmower , but I didn’t wanna walk away from that oil and risk it not being there again.

Any push mower that gets fresh oil at all is doing better than most. As long as it’s API I’d use it and 10w40 is a great choice.
This will be my first time running a 40 weight oil in an engine that calls for 30. I have zero fear in using it because I know it will work just fine, but it wasn’t until a couple months ago that I learned about high heat and thinning oils with air cooled engines so 10W-40 it is.

Since you will be using only a quart, get the best you kind find. Order online if you have to. I have been using Mobil 1 in my push mower with a Kohler since beginning for 15 to 20 years. never have to add between changes. You will have to determine what you think the best brand is but don't cheap out on lubrication. It's not going to bust the bank.

Yeah I hear ya and normally I do spend the extra coin on motor oil, but I knew I would be dumping this oil quickly because of break in. After I deplete the pure guard I’ll go to a better oil in 40W.
