Just did an oil change on the autocross Honda before we run it next week in Kansas for the National Championships.

New valves, springs/seals/retainers, slight head mill, no cam work, all about 500 miles ago. Idiots did not break the head in or go easy on it at all, used Torco 10w30 and a K&N oil filter right away. Many, many hot autocross laps (air temp 110+, multiple drivers).

Drained the oil out this afternoon, pulled the K&N filter...no oil came out. Fliped it upside down, no oil came out. Great ADBV!!
Magnetic drain plug looked like it belonged in a differential, not the engine--caked with metal fragments. Car is currently running a tad hot, with Cylinder 3 exhaust gas temps average 100 deg higher than the other three cylinders, mysterious coolant loss from radiator in measurable quantities with only the *slightest* of leak/weep from an errant clamp (nothing to worry about, but the loss is).

I finally got one of the Blackstone sample jars in the mail and retrieved a proper sample, so that will be heading off when we get back from Topeka.

BTW-- fresh Torco 5w30 and K&N oil filter went back in, new Denso plugs, everything runs great. Distributor has a little bit of play and its wearing the cap a tad fast, but overall the car *seems* to be in good health and is blindingly fast.

Thanks guys!

Edit-- this WAS using the "Generation-1 MPZ" formula, the new 5w30 fill is the newer "Generation-2 MPZ" in the newly packaged bottle.

FWIW, Yamalube is Torco. That is where they make all of their money, renewing annual contracts with Yamaha motorcycles and watercraft. Retail oil is only about 8% of their total sales, and most of their sponsored teams do not use their retail oil, but a custom blend of additives based on certain performance needs of the competitor...MPZ is VERY expensive, special oils can get up to $300/gallon depending on how you want it.

Just some interesting notes :-P

Just got back from Topeka, KS from the SCCA Solo2 National Championships.

The Honda in Question won the STX Ladies class driven by Julie Avard, and I placed 8th in STS class of 45 top drivers...good enough for a nice fat trophy!! The new Torco feels great, and so far no weirdness. I will check tomorrow in the car's owner sent off the used oil sample for a UOA from the old junk in there...please, God, no coolant!!

Full results for STS (i'm 8th) at http://ww2.scca.com/soloresults.php?ID=68

Oh-- on the fragments-- the head apparently was cracked from one of the National Tour races in California, and the shop had to weld up the crack and then mill the head to smooth it out...not sure if that contributed to the metal shavings or not, but the engine is still losing coolant and we added about 1/3 gallon across a week of autocross competition, no external leaks.

Thanks!
