Last Saturday I took our 2009 Saturn Vue (2.4L) to the
dealer for an oil change. I had them put Dexos 1 Shell
oil and was telling the tech. that I do 7000 km (4000 mi)
OCI's. He told me not to push it any longer because they
found out that longer OCI's on the V6 3.6 engines was
causing timming chain failures. They had to reprogram the
computer for shorter OCI's on these engines. Has anyone
heard of this?

Yes, and it is true, but I don't believe it applies to your Ecotec engine. There shouldn't be an OCI reprogram for a 4-cylinder Vue I don't think.

Thats right. He told me no issues with the 2.4 L engine.
I'm thinking now it might be the result of fuel in the oil
(direct injection) causing viscosity breakdown after
10-12000 km (7000 mi).

I do think that it is due to the Direct Injection and fuel in the oil. I'm sure this is the cause. My daughter's 2011 Equinox has a maximum of 5500 miles for oil change by the OLM.

Thats about 8500 km instead of the max. 11000-12000 km.
I'm assuming she has the 3.6 in which case the computer
has been already changed.
