My co-worker and I will sometimes jaunt over to Costco for a cheap lunch (either a Polish or a slice of pizza). After eating we'll walk the aisles and peruse the goods for sale. We always end up in the "auto" aisle and take a look at what oils are for sale and what's selling at a high rate. In the past M1 has always been a fast mover there, with a pallet usually selling in a few weeks.

After the whole M1 Group III debacle that came out last year, I decided to do a little experiment. Back on December 23rd, I needed to pick up a few party trays of food for Xmas Eve. I remembered that I had a Sharpie in my shirt pocket so I decided to mark a bunch of M1 cases sitting on each top layer (5w30 and 10w30). Fast forward to today.

A month and a week later only FIVE cases with my mark were gone (four 5w30's and one 10w30). The amount and level of cases appeared to be the same as back on Dec 23rd.

Do you think the news about Group III spread fast???

Well, what I thought over and realized was, I can get 6 quarts of regular M1 at costco for 29 and some cents, OR I can go to Walmart and buy a 5 quart jug for 22.50 (or so). I figure getting it at walmart is a much better deal. And besides, you could get the EP for about 28. Just makes sense to go to Walmart if you really need M1 in your sump. And besides, I'd rather buy a ton of Delo from Costco

All I know is whenever I go to my AAP or autozone to get their best deal, it's always the guy before me who bought it all, whether the stuff was advertised or not. There's gotta be a lot of BITOGers out there, stop taking my stuff

Not many people DIYing oil changes in dead winter...not smart ones. Costco is not so much hardcore customers who would attempt such a stunt either.

Pretty good evidence of what unsubstantiated rumors on the internet can accomplish.

Some believe everything they see here. Moderators seem to go along with it so it must be true, eh?

My guess is that 99.9% of people that shop Costco don't have a clue what group I, II, III, IV, and PAO are. They have never heard of this website either. I don't think the internet rumor have a dang thing to do with it. Not many people want to lay under their vehicle during the winter changing their oil.
