Exactly; that was essentially my point. Within reason, a few choices will work very well. I don't think we're being "cheated" in North America with 20 grades recommended any more than Europeans are cheated when the same vehicle might call for a relatively expensive A5/B5 5w30.

Several places in the world are envious of our oil prices (even in Canada). We're envious of their "freedom of choice" with respect to viscosity.

You're both right

but it's a little annoying to have Honda owners (and even some people here) tell me I will damage my Insight or Civic engine because I run the thicker 0w-30.

I bet someone will reply to me now and say, "Honda is smarter than you. Stick with 0w-20 dummy!"

Maybe you'll lose 1000 miles of total lifespan, or gain that much. We'll certainly never be able to tell. As long as we stay away from bizarre grades in -40, we'll be fine.

Exactly! Again, the whole point of this article was to point out some discrepancies with using a thinner 20 weight oil. This isn't to condemn those who use 5W20 in their Ford's, Honda's, or any other vehicle for that matter, but ultimately when you factor in fuel dilution, VII shear, or general high OCI wear on ANY oil it will shear down, most used oil analysis show shearing rates of generally one grade, i.e, 40 down to a 30, 30 down to a 20, etc. This is further accelerated with cold temperatures and short commutes, potentially bringing the 0/5W-20 down to a 0/5W-15 weight oil. Again, odds are the manufacturers have taken this into account, but the facts still remain that most manufacturers are working to keep up and exceed CAFE requirements, as is the case with U.S and Euro oil specs being varied (5W20 v.s 5W30), and I think most here will agree that Europe is far ahead of us as far as fuel economy, stricter oil minimums/requirements, emissions, etc.
Supposedly there are more older vehicles on the road now than ever before, but the vast majority of the auto manufacturers are expecting original owners to sell/trade in their vehicles at faster rates instead of racking up 300,000K + miles on them. It's much more simplistic and convenient instead of re-engineering an engine or trans (GDI, CVT trans, etc.) to drop the weight of the oil, and save 1-1.5% fuel economy on initial start up and once it's up to operating temperature and run the risk/possibility of increased wear; again RISK/POSSIBILITY OF INCREASED WEAR.

The assumption is that the 5W-20 will shear out of grade at the same rate as the 5w30. However, the 5w30 grades have lower initial base oil viscosity and a higher treat rate of polymer thickener. Given the same polymer chemistry, the wider span the multi-grade the faster it will shear out of grade. For the grades under debate, you are talking about 35SSI olefin copolymer.

On the one hand you have VII shear and fuel dilution - on the other hand you have oxidation thickening and evaporative thickening. Those factors are competing, and the influence of one factor over another is dependent on DI package, VII chemistry, driving cycle, engine design, etc.... it is a hodgepodge of competing factors at play. For my drive cycle (1.6L I4) of 40 mile freeway commutes, I am much more worried about oxidation and thickening than I am about fuel dilution.

I suggest you check out the used oil analysis for 20 grades posted on this site. I can't say that I recall any of them being out of grade on the thin end.
I have seen them thicken though.
I suggest reading more and assuming less. Your whole post is myth
 
Any that are on the thin side get explained away as "not the oil, fuel dilution", "10% isn't that much"...

Exactly what I mean by diminished protection when things aren't exactly spot on.

Hey jake88, just wanted to clarify that I wasn't under the assumption that the 5W-20 & 5w30 would shear at the same rate given similar driving conditions (as you stated correctly the VII added to the base oil between the two are used in different ratios), but that ANY oil under a variety of conditions: fuel dilution, VII shear, high OCI, etc. could experience a drop in oil viscosity no matter what their initial starting weight. You're absolutely right that on the flip side you have oxidation thickening and evaporation losses and are just as important factors as oil shear.

Hey there Clevy! Just wanted to let you know that I wasn't stating that 5W20 are more shear prone than other oils, they tend to be quite stable due to the smaller amount of VII needed, and tons of options for high quality 5W20 in partial and full synthetic varieties available. I'm not exactly sure what in my post is "myth"? My main interest with 5W20 is that Ford and Honda for example recommended the use of 5W20 for many of their vehicles in the US, but in Europe specifically recommended the use of 5W30 for the same vehicles, stating that the use of 5W20 would void factory warranties. This was more visibly seen by European Ford dealerships refusal to use 5W20, and then years down the road team up with Castrol and formulate a new oil spec for 5W20 use (WSS M2C948 B). The only speculation I have concerning this is whether Ford pressured the use of 5W20 to the Euro Ford Branch, possibly explaining their opposition to it for years to come.

Sounds like you're talking about a Hyundia/KIA vehicle. I'm in the same mindset as you, and our 2012 KIA will be getting 5w30 once the 5w20 is used up. The first UOA I did the oil held up very well but the wear wasn't stellar, I'm betting it woulda been better on a 5w30. I will eventually find out. I have nothing to lose but 1/8th of a mpg.


Yes... talking 2010 Hyundai Tucson, 2.4L GDI. 53k+ on the clock and not a single issue so far. May focus back to the Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 (have PP stash) but may try PU come next spring/summer for a fill or two and see how that does. Just have to get the 5w-20 used up first.
And will continue to use OEM filters.
 
Browsed through the Statoil shelves here and found like 35 engine oils and ONE 5w-20 (1 bottle),no 0w-20. It was a ACEA A1/B1, very specific ford oil on the sticker. Like two 5w30 oils.
Can only say that in 20-30k km OCI land, there's almost only 5w40 and 0w40 that sells on the consumer side. Strange enough, can see a few 10w-60 too. Bear in mind Sweden is *not* a hot area...
Semi Synthetic oils are 10w40. Straight 30's are labelled "Lawn Mower".

So why are 5w-20 so common in the US? Bigger trucks - thinner oils??? Can't figure it out unless it's regulation.
