Installed Rebuilt Calipers - Brake bleed issue

Hi all, I just replaced the rear calipers in our '95 Odyssey with some rebuilt units from Auto-Value (Cardone is the brand they told me at the counter). They seem to be a good fit overall but there seems to be a bit of fluid getting past the bleed screw. I haven't replaced calipers before to know if this is normal or not; what I'm hoping is that what I'm seeing is just a bit of fluid that would have been displaced past the threads at the time of installation and not that they are leaking or something. Concerned about moisture getting in.

Anyone else have this experience.

FWIW the bleed screws are one-man-bleeder type (ie non-stock). I wonder if they may not be seating properly but if that were the case I should see fluid out the bleed-hole rather than at the threads.

Thanks!

Greg

Out the threads? Sounds like they didn't use the right bleeder screws. I'd try some new bleeder screws, and see if that fixes the issue.

Agreed... Even try throwing in the old ones if you can get them out. This is of course, assuming that bleeders are sufficiently tight to begin with.

Greg, did you install the speed bleeders? If so, the new calipers should have been clean and dry during installation, thus no chance of what you describe in your original post.

Speed bleeders are supposed to have thread compound that seals the threads from leakage.

Are you sure they are speed bleeders? The reason I ask is that I saw some rebuilt calipers at Autozone with some weird, extra long regular bleeders. Dumb....because they would be more prone to get broken off.

If they are regular bleeders, than maybe they just need a tiny bit more snugging up.

I find when tightening bleeder screws and even brake line inlets you really have to snug them good. also make sure the copper crush washer is intact. I've had to replace one of those before on a brand new caliper (it leaked no matter how tight it was until I replaced the washer)

Thanks for the replies all, I think I might have got a little excited a little too soon - just had a second look and I think it may be that I just didn't clean things up enough after installation. Gave a more thorough scrub and went and stood on the brakes (engine off) a couple of times and on further inspection, no fresh fluid so maybe a false alarm on my part (sorry).

to address other points - yup they're Speed Bleeders. Wasn't going to name names because I wasn't intending to review anything but then realized I did that for Cardone

oops.

Speed bleeders seem like good stuff. I did have a shop bleed my brakes (yeah....i know) and I think the mechanic must have scraped off the sealant that was mentioned earlier, thinking it was crud or some weird thing that I had added. Will have to order a jar of their sealant since I'm sure it's missing on my front bleed screws as well.

if they are indeed leaking from the screws maybe they are not tight enough... I stay away from anything touched by them had much to many issues through the years

touched by who? What issues have you had? Things are already installed so it would be good to know what to look out for.

Thanks!
