You downloaded, but have you installed it on your hard drive? We can't seem to be able to get a straight answer to a simple question from you, Dave.

I have it running now with the flash drive. I d/l'ed it, tried opening and I get a box stating something like 'no application available" I then shutdown, rebooted and it says that no operating system is found. I can get to desktop and open firefox and see where the file is from the download list.So as far as being on the HD, i don't believe it's there.

Sorry I haven't been reading this thread.

Are you wanting to install it on the flashdrive itself or actually on your computer?

If on the computer, you need to go to windows disk manager (Recommended) or gparted from booting to live OS from the flash drive.

Then you need to repartition your hard drive to allow space for the Linux OS to install. 200GB should be _sufficient_.

Keep the partition as unallocated.

Then reboot into the flash drive and install. Mint should have a GUI installer to walk you through the setup. It will notice the unallocated memory space on the hard drive. You select "Install alongside windows" or something equivalent. And the rest is simply following its prompts.

I lost track of OP's various threads and posts, but I thought his new hard drive/SSD does not have anything on it currently.

Then It's better to just install the Mint on the SSS instead of running it from a USB stick/flash.

That is EXACTLY what i have been trying to do! The problem is that I don't know exactly how to get it onto the ssd.

most linux distros allow you to boot from the usb key, then run the OS from the key.

When you log into the OS, it will have a desktop icon to load the OS onto the hard disk.

Make sure you have the right iso for your cpu architecture (amd64, x86, etc).

Then rebuild your linux bootable usb key.

I use a piece of software for windows called Lili that makes bootable linux usb keys.

We use Dban for wiping drives securely and that is linux based.

Maybe it doesn't like your brand new SSD which has no partition table on it.

Run gparted. This should be included on the install iso without needing to connect to the Internet. On the right side of the gparted window, switch to select the disk that is blank (probably sda). Then under Device, create a partition table of type msdos. Then create a new partition of type ext4, the whole disk is the default. Check the "boot" flag. Commit these changes, wait for the disk to be formatted. Close gparted, and reboot to the USB again. Then try the install. You should choose "Erase the disk and install Linux Mint."

Ok, when I go to device to create partition table, i get this "1 partition is currently active on device /dev/sda" A new partition table cannot be created when there are active partitions. Active partitions are those that are in use, such as a mounted file system, or enabled swap space.
Use Partition menu options, such as unmount or swapoff, to deactivate all partitions on this device before creating a new partition table.

Can someone just do the desktop sharing and possibly fix this? This is working with the flashdrive well. This is what i'm using to post and upload pics.

My guess is you are looking at the wrong drive. Gparted is looking at your flash drive. You need to point it toward your SSD.

Yes, on the right side of the window, there is a pull down list: see if there is a sdb.

If the only drive you see is the USB flash drive, it is possible the SSD is not working at all. In that case boot to the BIOS setup and see if any SATA drives are listed.
